Tolerance for mistakes

Hi Mr Tan,
I am an avid follower of your blog. I do notice that the entries you have written often draw responses, positive and negative, from the public. There were times when people wrote really nasty things about Income whenever Income makes mistakes here and there.

However, I hardly hear about the public complimenting about the extra mile that Income (or other insurance companies) do for their policy holders. Have we turned into a society where we respond with over-the-top reactions to mistakes, be it minor or major? Have we turned into a society where we cannot make room for mistakes? Must everything go strictly to what has been planned ahead? :(

Pardon me for sounding stereotypical. However, I do feel that society as a whole is becoming less tolerant towards people making mistakes. Patience seems to be in short supply these days and tempers flare too easily. It 'beggars belief' that society is opening up as a whole to welcome people from other parts of the world when minds are shrinking in size.

I apologise for this long email. However, I am not sure if I am the only one behaving in this way. Is it too much to ask for a little patience?

Thank you for your useful observations. I agree with your thoughts.

  1. I disagree that we should tolerate the mistakes of insurance agents. They are so called "professionals" and have the FUTURE of their cleints in thier hands. If they are not qualified or adequately qualified they should leave the industry before more people get hurt. The problem is the customers are themselves ignorant of this and they continue to be victims if they are not aware of who and who are the qualified advisers and who these insurance agents are and why they should not be trusted.
Do you condone a surgeon leaving a knife in the patient's stomach after a surgery by mistake? or a blood transfusion tainted with HIVs; or a lawyer who screwed up your case; or an insurance who sold a product which you realised that it was wrong product after 30 years. They must be responsible. We cannot let them fool us with their incompetency and dishonesty and many belong to this group. They are in a very responsible position. If they make one mistake, it is forgivable but they continue to CONSCIOUSLY commit mistakes. Isn't this wileful? Is this has become criminal?

  2. Maybe you have not discovered what the agent has done to you. Why not get an independent adviser to look at your insurance policies.I bet that you have a lot of rubbish products that were sold to you by the agent you trusted. You are not trained so you won't know or detect the rubbish. Before it is too late it is wise to seek a second opinion if those policies were sold to you by an insurance salesman or woman. I bet 100 to 1 that you will be shocked by what your agent has done to you. You thought he or she was an expert until you consult a real expert.Remember this, if your agent was a salesman the products are suspects.

  3. You seem to sympathize with the insurance agents. Probably you have not being played out by your agent. Or probably you do not know becuase you haven't let some expert examine the policies you bought. The expert i mean adviser who is qualified and trained, like Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and not insurance salesmen. These salesmen are bull and you might have bought a load of crap policies from him or her already.
Your view might change after the review by another adviser. In fact it is strongly recommended that you
seek a third party to review from time to time. This is a safeguard for you.
