Lost trust in insurance companies and bank

Dear Mr Tan,
When I started work, I was introduced to an insurance agent. The insurance agent told me that I should buy a life insurance – one that can protect me and my family financially if anything should happen to me and if nothing happens, it served as a forced saving with good returns.

I was concerned about the non-guarantee return portion and was assured that in the history of the company; they have NEVER reduced the non-guarantee portion. It was divided into guaranteed and non-guaranteed portion to meet MAS guideline. I asked several insurance companies to quote me the same type of policy with the same coverage and bought one with the highest monetary return.

Throughout the years that followed, I started accumulating insurance policies for my husband, my children and myself from different insurance companies. At one time, I was paying $1,000 per month for my whole family’s insurance policies. I told myself that I am saving for my future, my children education, my retirement.

In 2003, I started receiving numerous letters from my insurance companies announcing that they would adjust the non-guaranteed returns. Some insurance companies even adjust their returns (downwards) every 6 months. The amount I thought I could accumulate for my retirement was substantially reduced by 30% to 40%. I had NEVER once default my monthly payment but the insurance companies did not fulfill what was promised to me at the point of sales. I was disheartened and felt cheated.

I told myself to hold on until the ‘break-even’ point. But within 3 years, the break-even point for most if not all my policies were pushed from the 12th year to the 15th year then to the 18th year.

I decided to terminate ALL my insurance policies for my family to cut my losses. By doing so, I lost more than 60% of what I had paid for those policies. I took back $20,000 and lost more than $30,000 for those policies that have not reach the 'break-even' point.

The insurance companies ask my reason for termination. When I told them about the reduced return, they told me that insurance was for protection and not for returns (saving). I had to remind them that returns (saving) was my consideration for taking the policies.

Later, I was persuaded into purchasing Mini Bond by the relationship manager of a major bank, who claimed that it was a high return and safe product. I bought the product. When Lehman Brothers collapse in 2008, I lost all the money. I was once again dubbed and conned, now by the bank!

I have learned my lesson. I do not trust anyone - insurance company or bank. I have lost my family and my life saving for being too trustful. I am so traumatised by all these that I now keep all my cash at home; as I will never know which bank will go bankrupt next. I just hope, from the start someone had told me not to buy insurance policies with saving element which was mentioned in Mr. Tan’s book.

  2. Recommend that you open a safe box with a "reputable" bank and stash your cash there. Else the 3rd scenario would be having a real life "3rd" robber at your home and take away all your savings. Very frustrating but these are facts of life.

  3. It is sad to hear your story. Your story is typical of people who rely on insurance plans for protection and saving and both these two elements failed you.
Many baby boomers have realised that too. They trusted their insurance agents that the cash values of insurance can help fund their retirement. The projection return was unrealistic projected at 8-10% return and this gave these baby boomers a false sense of peace of mind and through the years many many adjustments were made to the return and as result these people relied on the cash value for return was disappointed, some reduced as much as 70%.
    Whose faults?
The companies and the greedy and incompetent agents. There is no more fiduciary duty of the agents and the companies. Both are greedy and resort to unethical practices and dishonesty. Both scratch each other's back. Both win except the customers who are robbed of their hard earned money.
What about MAS, the regulator, the refree?
MAS is manned by ostriches with Harvard degrees and who cannot see and hear the cry of help by raped victims.
    *****Remember this!!!!!
Separate your protection need and saving. Get a qualified, competent and honest adviser planner with CFP and CFA qualification. DON"T use an insurance agent who is disguised as CONsultant because you will soon realise that you have employed a wolf in charge of your chicken house.

  4. I am in sympathy with you. Before our so called Govt with high integrity followed Hongkong meekly with guarantee for all bank deposits up to end 2010, I did consider where to keep my cash, either in Hongkong or Australia. It's a strange feeling that I don't even trust my own country to keep my retirement
moneys, and for the first time in my life consider migrating to another country by advising my son, who is a local talent in R & D
Engineering to get a job overseas so that he could get a green card in due course, and bring
    the whole family over later.

  5. If this is true and typical then it is terrible.

Just put in savings and FDs with banks. 100% guaranteed by govt until end 2010.

Govt guarantee and banks (local ones for savings and FD, not structured products) have to trust lah, if not it is Doomsday for Singapore.

  6. I do Hope this writer, will please write a letter to the ST forum and also send it to Mr Tan's Blog so that we will all know, " How fair will the Straits Times be when the letter is not printed". ( You could remain anonymous until your letter is printed )

When I first bought life insurance in the 80's it was stated one of the key element was the saving and returns component.... How can they now tell you it is not meant for saving... WHY Then are they still selling Life insurance???? Why not push Term!!!
    (I cancelled in 2000)

  8. Losing money is painful. It can still be earned.
I hope you and your family are well and healthy.
    There is life to live.
We all have trials and tribulations. Some more, some less.
We meet kind and helpful people, we also meet people who are not so kind and not helpful.

Do what you like with your money. Most of all, do what makes you happy. Do not worry about retirement. It will come naturally. Look for happiness in life, money helps, but it also causes sadness.
Earn the money, at the same time, earn the joy of living and being with your family.
May you find laughter and joy in your journey.

  12. The insurance can say and do anything . They are regulated by MAS but MAS can't be bothered. But when MAS recieved complaint they tell the victims to go to FIDREC and subject to humiliation. Same people run FIDREC.
The agents will tell you for protection and saving and you need forced saving because you are hopeless and not disciplined. But when things turn up bad they tell don't cancel becuase the whole life is for protection and not saving. Now what is what? They say anything they like. They are conman and women.
Consumers are treated like fools while the insurance agents laugh all the way to the bank. Also they get to go incentive trips by the companies, wine and dine in posh places and they are awarded with titles like mdrt million dollar stuff. The truth is the award is for robbing people of millions.

  13. One company called their insurance agents 'super duper' agents. Very apt adjective.. They must have duped a lot of consumers inorder to to qualify for the superlative adjective
They are still duping consumers with their product
    peddling tactics.

  14. Though some of the products are really no good, but I remembered when the insurance agent came to my house to give me a $120,000 claim cheque for cancer. Up till now, I am very grateful that i bought those insurance policies.

  15. You made a small mistake purchasing whole life insurance, and not term. Then you commit a silly mistake of terminating the policy early. It is a big mistake you bought minibond without knowing what it is. BUT, the biggest mistakes of all is you put all your $$ at home. Your plight started from the beginning, you should get it right early. I don't want to rub it in, but I think you don't deserve any sympathy.

  16. Looks like I am not the only one who has been betrayed. I now not only blame the insurance company since I bought from NTUC Income, which is supposed to be backed by the PAP govt. I am angry that our govt allowed this to happen, in the name of caring for Singaporeans, by recruiting foreigners who started the rot by systematically cutting bonuses and disrupting my retirement plans. Now even compounded series policies which are supposed to give enhanced returns in return for a higher premium are targeted. Terminating a policy would mean, like in your case, the $30,000 would go into the orphan fund which is used to purchase full colour, full page advertisement in the Straits Times and major newspapers to say how honest they are, how transparent they are, how they care for us etc. This makes me see red and reminded me constantly whenever I read the newsapapers or take the MRT as it is splashed all across MRT stations. They are taking your hard earned money to advertisement themselves in the belief that when a lie is repeated often enough it becomes the truth. This kind of irresponsible foreigner should be sacked otherwise we will take our anger to the election table when the time comes. They disrupted our plans for retirement yet have the cheek to say they can plan for our retirement, really no shame but what is really shocking is that our govt is turning a blind eye to it. I consider such acts as our govt helping foreigners to do us in and I will not forgive them for doing this to us while getting millions for such a lousy job.

  17. I don't quite get it. My understanding is: All insurance plans, upon early termination, will result in a loss, even if the company can match the returns - why?

I think a good insurance policy should not be a loss at all at any point - else it is not fair to the consumer. It should be guaranted returns and guaranteed coverage all the way, take out the non-guaranteed part. Please push for this.

The writer should consider products that are all guaranteed. capital guaranteed, interest guaranteed type of insurance. Or else, if banks/insurance companies used the word "non-guaranteed" and they really meant non-guaranteed, and the writer was expecting "guaranteed", then it is a mismatch of expectations.

    Thanks

  18. After I read the story , i was like "WOW". When your luck is really down , it goes all the way down to the bottom of the pit. I can never face your scenario and some people might even kill themselves. I give my respect to you.

  19. "Get a qualified, competent and honest adviser planner with CFP and CFA qualification"

Becareful with this advise. I got burn for buying MB while my FA is a qualified CFA.

Qualification does not mean understand product. All the Philips Securities FAs were trained by Lehman Brothers according to MAS report. When they walked out of the training, they sent emails to their trusted clients saying:

    i) low risk, as safe as deposit
    ii) 6 companies' bonds.
iii) 9/150 default of underlyning securities will trigger credit event thus safe.

Nothing was mentioned about Swap Gurrantor/Minibond Pte Ltd as credit event.

Please trust yourself. Not MAS, not Govt, not FIs and definitely not FA. Write to blog for independent advise. Don't only read brochure, but also pricing statements and prospectus. The problem with MB is that you will not understand the pricing statement or the prospectus. FAs ALSO DON'T UNDERSTAND as they only sell and convince their trusted clients the product is good. And Phillip Securities said they and their FAs are not responsible for any advices given Under Clause 14 of their "terms and conditions" when you open an trading account.

Be very, very careful. It is your hard earned money.

  20. I do agree that CFA or CFP can also betray or mis-sold you. For those without it is even worse. This is rare because they are rare but the many without proper qualification are pretending they have and talk like they are financial experts.
They are insurance agents with financial titles who are fit to use these titles. Example like the ntuc agents, are they fit to be called financial consultants? More like CONinsultant. These are dangerous people to be avoided. These titles were given by the FT. He thinks the titles can hoodwink consumers. They are like wolves in sheep clothing. Now they change colour and new clothing to look like lamb, but they are actually wolves in lamb's clothing. So be careful.

  22. MAS should ban insurance companies from cutting bonuses. If they cant get the ban to be implemented, then it shd nt be sold to end consumers. Consumers will always be a victim. My only hope is on INCOME. But sad to say, it is always reducing. If only Old Mr Tan is still the big bosss. I am v sure thng will be at the consumers advantage, crisis loan will be available too. Sad...

  23. Yes, if only Mr. Tan is running the show .I have lost confidence in the FT and his new team since the day he took over. You will see the products are getting worser and worser. Those with these product must complaint to MAS otherwsie MAS think the insurance company is following the law

  24. One way is to get your agent or FA to buy whatever you buy. Ask them to show you policies that THEY have bought. Ask them why did they buy it and what do they expect from it.
Of course they will say each person is different.
Never mind. Ask anyway. Tell them that it helps you understand the concept better.
You may be surprised what will happen
    A) They give up trying to sell to you.
    B) They reveal that they do not need.
    C) Some other weak reason.

Best type of coverage is: save $250 every month for 13 months: Thats $3250. Do this for the next 20 years. You will get $65,000. Enough for open heart surgery in C class.

2nd option: Every year, after saving $3250, buy 1000 Singtel shares. Do this for 10 years.
You will have 10,000 Singtel shares. The company not likely to dissapear. Contninue to save $250 every month for the next 10 years. You will get more than $65,000. ( approx 6-10% more ) no guarantees just like insurance anyway!

If you think you will die within 10years, then might as well spend like there is no tomorrow.
After all, no insurance company will insure you anyway!

Take charge of your life, your money and your future.

Spend within your means, save within your means.

Do you know how much you spend in 1 month?

Not everyone must have car. Or laptop, or handphone. Not everyone needs to have own home. Live with your parents. Be nice to your brother and sisters.

  25. My husband is a tour agent and told me that for years, all big insurance companies give lavished incentive tours to their insurance agents. They go to places like Europe, US, etc. - squandering away policy holders’ money.

Can all these insurance companies able to pay back the policy’s holders at the end is a BIG question mark.

  27. If you have revosave from Ntuc ask the agents whether they bought too. I bet they don't have because they know it is not good. Only fools like their trusting customers will buy.The agents will lie that it is good for their customers, good because they stand to earn good commission.

  31. I find that I am in the same predicament, maybe even worse. I am still holding (and still paying) almost 20 policies bought over the years for my whole family. I am still undecided whether to terminate them. It will be big loss if I terminate them now. If I dont terminate I have a feeling I may be feeding good money into an ever ballooning loss.

Insurance, minibonds, high notes, oilpod, land banking, plus others. They all started out as "diversification".

Its really sickening to be cheated and stuck on so many types of investments and savings.

  32. The only way to stop all these nonsense is to cast your vote wisely in the next election. Only then will our govt sit up and take notice that the thousands we lose are not peanuts. This is the only way to make them review their hiring policies in order to safeguard our insurance policies. Right now they are so comfortable with their salaries, like striking first prize in Big sweep several times a year that they cannot understand what the fuss is over peanuts as thousands of dollars feel like peanuts to them.

  33. My aunt died a year ago leaving behind her only daughter who was below 21 years old. She did not leave a will thinking that all she had, including insurance’s pay-out will go to her only daughter.

Now, one year had passed and her daughter is still unable to receive anything from a 'big and reputable' insurance company - as she was only 20 years old when her mother passed away and she does not have a guardian so the money cannot automatically goes to her.

We had spent thousands of dollars getting a lawyer's letter as required by the insurance company but till date the matter is still not resolve and my cousin has not receive a single cent from the insurance company.

Food for thought: We pay so much to the insurance company thinking that our family would be financially 'protected' if anything happens to us. But look at my aunt's case... Good thing all the other family members are helping her, if not how a 20 years old girl know what to do or have the money to get lawyer's letter just to get back what she deserve??? The insurance company would not ask anything when premium are paid to them BUT when they need to pay-out to the decease’s family, they made it so DIFFICULT!

During time of difficulty (emotionally and financially) instead of helping the family, insurance company made it so complex for family to make the claim that is rightfully theirs!!!

Beware : Insurance company - YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW!!!

  37. To all victims, I can only say this is the price to pay for having a wrong perception of our living environment. Civics and ethics that were taught in school were and will never be practiced in our financial world.

After attending an interview and going through a list of questionaires (15 pages)formulated by one FI, (the gist of which was "why didn't you read this, read that ... when you make the purchase?"; I was so pissed off that I replied that it had never occurred to me as well as fellow investors to read the investment brochures (thoroughly) as if it will be our "LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT".

So from now on, do read and UNDERSTAND what you are buying. Don't rely on the recommendations churned out by the FI and their representatives. Make your own financial decisions; not forgetting that you still have to pay commissions on this purchases.

The financial world do not understand and value the word "trust". Neither do they admit that there is such a vocabulary as "being misled".
