This is a command and control type of culture & country.
If you are not part of the favoured short-list of elite, don't take up this type of course.
A few decades back, I was a working class kid (1st year) in an elite junior college.
I observed the elections of 1st year students for student councilors in utter amazement.
The 2nd year student councilors had already decided beforehand which 1st year students they wanted to succeed in the "free" elections.
So during the election speeches, the 2nd year student councilors proceeded to "sabotage" the non-favoured candidates with questions and innuendos.
I still remember to this day one poor girl whose morals were called into question by a 2nd year councilor. It seems this 2nd year councilor saw here walking around the college with one of her blouse buttons undone.
Nothing changed when I joined the workforce. The hard work was done by the non-scholars and non graduates. The progress reporting (and hence credit) was given to the graduates and scholars.
ha! ha!.. yes! true!.. I had similar encounters too and not only in school, in work place when a new team was voted in to replace the Unionists.. this is where the seeds of electorial strategies are learnt by the people who yearn for power!
The union is affiliated to NTUC of course.
The only union that stands alone is SIA pilots.. ALPAS... but even then they are not spared.. remember a captain got kicked out of the country?

MOE had a press release in 2008 stating the desire of setting up a liberal arts college. Any follow-up on this?

Liberal arts education? What about liberating our current suffocating political environment first?
