Hi Mr. Tan,
I was approached by a marketing manager who gives me an interesting investment proposal. Can I asked your opinion. Will it be a good investment to put some money on land in Canada near Vancouver?

Go to Ask Mr. Tan or www.tankinlian.com/ask.aspx and search for "Land Banking". You will see a FAQ written by me previously.
Land banking is another conman job, do touch. Invest you money in local blue chip stocks as STI is having a quite significant pull-back now.
ReplyDeleteVancouver residential prices are as crazy as Singapore now. Buying a completed condo or house in Canada today is similar to buying in US in 2006. Buying strange undeveloped land in the boondocks with castle-in-the-sky fairytale of "potential" residential/commercial developments is even worse.
ReplyDeleteAfter the 2008 financial crash, you could buy US landbanking the size of 5 football fields on Ebay for $1000, or worthless UK landbank on UK Ebay for 1 pound per acre of land. Something like the British selling us Sembawang Naval Base or Nee Soon Camp for S$1 when they pulled out of S'pore in 1972.
The Chinese govt is much smarter. China Investment Corp, CNOOC, SinoPec, PetroChina have been buying huge territories in Texas US and British Columbia Canada. They are going for "stuff in the ground" --- billions of barrels of oil and cubic feet of natural gas. The Chinese are securing commodities around the world by partnerships and buying majority stakes in companies/govts owning the land. Smart investors have been identifying various companies owning this type of land with proven undeveloped deposits of resources and buying into their shares.
Folks, for the umpteen time, lay off land banking investments.
