What is so disappointing about George is he is willing to take instructions from his boss to push for the casino projects. As fellow Catholics, consider him a sinner, as gambling is a sin. This mistake overrides whatever good work he had done for Singapore's Foreign Affairs. He, Vivian and his boss will pay for what they have done to our Society, through divine retribution.
GY first came into my consciousness when he observed the similarity in geopolitics between countries surrounding the South China Sea and those around the Mediterranean Sea in times of antiquity, or words to that effect. Sorry, unable to pinpoint the correct info after some googling. As a history buff, I was struck by the scholarly comment and thought this G has a unique grasp of history.
However my high regard for him was shattered when he spouted, and I quote: “Remember your place in society before you engage in political debate... Debate cannot degenerate into a free-for-all where no distinction is made between the senior and junior party... You must make distinctions – what is high, what is low, what is above, what is below, and then within this, we can have a debate, we can have a discussion... people should not take on those in authority as ‘equals’”. – Straits Times, Feb 1994. I was cheesed off by this distinction between the high and the low which goes against the spirit of equality enshrined in our constitution. It’s strange how a little remark has such great impact on my opinion of him, though perhaps he could have been quoted out of context.
