Flexible and separate currency

Should a country have a separate currency that can be made flexible? My personal view is "yes". Here is an article that argue in favour of the same outcome.

    The best argument for having your own currency is; Mahatir, 1997 Asian Financial crisis, Malaysian currency peg.

    Arguably one of the greatest feats in modern economics.

    Too bad Mahatir has very bad press in the west. I'm pretty sure there are many valuable lessons there.
