Look at this article in a completely different way. The fact that Singapore is a place with no "creativity" in the local citizens, being stymied by the PAP Govt for decades, that this writer's creativity is allowed to flourish so easily, the vacuum is there for him to fill up with ease. This is one smart European bloke.
