The petrol station that I frequently was demolished recently. The pump attendant had told me a few months ago that their company lost the tender for the renewal of the lease and a new petrol station would be taking over. I did not realize that this meant a total reconstruction work for the petrol station.
I have been quite unhappy about wasteful practices that jack up the cost of living and the cost of doing business in Singapore. The previous petrol station was in good condition. It has to be torn down and replaced by a more expensive development paying a higher cost of occupancy. It must result in a higher cost of living.
Already, Singapore has become quite an expensive place to live in, and wages are still quite modest. We have to stop the wasteful practices and higher operating cost.

It is the same for HDB estate. They are repairing and changing unneccessary especially the floor, newly laid tiles. I called my estate repairing estate.
ReplyDeleteThose decision makers still get their salary at the end of the month regardless of the decisions they make. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteAgree with the wastage seen around Singapore, all in the name of progress, renewal or rejuvenation.
ReplyDeleteTake the Novena Shopping Complex, the side fronting Moulmein Road used to be an old low rise apartment building, it was torn down to make way for a 8 to 10 storey block, then 6 to 8 years later, it was demolished again to be rebuilt again, forming part of the now Novena Complex.
Imagine the additional and unnecessary cost of new steel, concrete materials and labour requirements.
External factors are always used by the Govt as the bogey man contributing to inflation, actually internal inflation is also caused by Govt policies and poor planning during Mah Bow Tan's days.
Watching the destruction of an only 8 year old building in front of our eyes made our hearts cringe with sadness, the wastage that is.
And the authorities call it city renewal, demolishing a relatively new building for another newer one.
Imagine every building here are slated for the sledge hammer every 8 to 10 years, to make way for a new one, all the world's building resources won't be able to satisfy Singapore's demand. Now we do really understand Indonesia's and Malaysian's actions in banning sand exports to us, do we care about environmental damage to our near neighbours. No, we dun care, we care only about making money.
At Marsiling RC (Blk 336 Woodland Ave 1), the well designed void deck was demolished. Please come and take a look.

ReplyDeleteIn the video clip, the court is gone.
At Fu Chuan CC (Woodland Ave 1), the pond is gone:

After spending much money, the electronic signage facing the main road was replaced by a traditional signage.
At Woodlands Polyclinic, it was upgraded and upgraded. Fine. Why the chairs are changed and changed at the Registration Counter?
ReplyDeleteAgree there are many instances of unneccessary wastage in S'pore. I see all round us coffee shops being taken over by new operator who offered higher rental and the shops being renovated again just after few years and everthing torn down when they are not old.
ReplyDeleteHere is another example of wasteful practices in Singapore.

It can be avoided if people who executive policies use their brain, rather than follow the book blindly.
They spend nearly $100M to destroy the Bishan canal and this is what you get:
