Lee Kuan Yew and National Day 2012

I was relieved and happy to see Mr. Lee Kuan Yew appear at the National Day Parade, and to put to rest the false rumors of his ill health. Like most Singaporeans, I like to wish him good health and a happy retirement from public life.

I will be writing a separate (and longer) post about my personal views on his contribution to Singapore and what I hope to see for the future.

I will also reflect on the Norwegian joke that caught the ire of many Singaporeans in Facebook.

  1. Lee Kuan Yew is a great man by any standard. When he knows how to exit at the right time making him even greater. My humble opinion.

  2. Agree posting the rumor on this blog is not in good taste, but TKL hit the nail on its head describing our Octogenarian LKY -

"somewhat respected but feared by many".
A spade is a spade, no other way.
Dun agree he's exited from the scene,
pulling strings from behind the bamboo curtain is suspected by many people, with his past utterance, something like,
"if he sees something wrong, he would still get up from his coffin, even after being lowered into his grave".

  3. He was great before he came to power. He was great before and after our merger with Malaysia. He was great when he transferred the premiership to GCT. The old guards certainly were great. But his closing chapter isnt great, a big blunder in my view(for anointing his son as the PM).

  5. Like many others, I heard too that an extremely reputable extraordinary man had passed away on 4 August 2012. Wow, it was a great unexpected roar of applause when the national tv camera zoomed in and the nation was caught by surprise in attention to greet moment of truth. The rest became false rumors immediately thereafterward. So next time, only believe what you see but don't simply believe what you hear. Any body knows who was the first rumor monger?

  6. LKY is 89 and has done alot for our country. Again and again, our great old guards left before passing the age of 90. It is a difficult time for his family & the nation but what can anyone do? This is the cycle of life. LKY, GKS, TCC and Raja will be remembered for many generation to come. Let's hope the next generation of Ministers will uphold the standard set by our founders and put service before self. Old policies need to review and quantum leap is needed e.g. shortened NS period. Increase the number of professional soldiers and reduce NS 2-years service. Return more CPF money back to the owner as the minimum sum is just too high. Review Pri/Sec educational system as Singaporeans are spending too much on tuition.
