What is an AED?

I see the AED signs in many places. I asked a few people - what does AED stand fo

None has the answer.

So I asked my last resort friend Google. He said - An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electricity which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.

With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layperson, and the use of AEDs is taught in many first aid, certified first responder, and basic life support (BLS) level cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes.

The portable version of the defibrillator was invented in the mid-1960s by Frank Pantridge in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Spare a thought for 'jobless' hawkers during renovation

When I visited the Upper Boon Keng Market and Food Centre recently, a hawker told me that the market and food centre will be closed for major renovation for a three-month period from May to July.
There are more than 80 stalls selling cooked food and drinks, as well as a few dozen stalls selling meat, fish, poultry and vegetables.
All in all, a couple of hundred of people will be out of work for this period.

Confusing taxi fares

I went to the taxi queue at Marina Cruise Center. There was a long queue and the taxis were slow in coming.

My friend said that the taxis are not given a surcharge for trips from the cruise center, so they boycott this location.

I went to the queue for large taxis where the fare is higher and the queue is shorter. Still, it took about 15 minutes before a taxi was available to pick me.

The people waiting in the queue for the normal taxi had to wait a much longer time.

Medical charges for foreign workers

At present, foreign workers have to pay the full medical charges and do not enjoy any subsidy. In some cases, they are treated in A class wards. I find this situation to be quite ridiculous.

I am in favor of giving subsidized health care for foreign maids and workers. Here are my reasons.

Adopt a neutral approach towards home ownership

For more than five decades, home ownership is taken for granted as being a desirable government policy. It has certainly worked very well during the first few decades of our nation building.

With the large increase in property prices since the mid 1980s, home ownership became a financial burden. Many young families could not afford to buy a HDB flat. They delayed their marriage.

To support home ownership, the CPF contribution rates were kept at a high level. This caused problem for local workers in competing for jobs against foreign workers who are not required to contribute to CPF.
