Leadership succession in Singapore - TKL's perspective

Singapore is now in a leadership succession crisis.

Heng Swee Kiat, who was in line to be the next prime minister, resigned abruptly from leadership of the team that is preparing to take over from the current prime minister. However, it seems that he will continue as a senior minister for the time being.

The other contenders in the leadership succession are Chan Chun Sing, Ong Ye Kung, Lawrence Wong and Desmond Lee.

  1. What is missing?

Tan Cheng Bock is a traitor and bit the hand that fed him. He is also not young.

In the Presidential and West Coast election, he lost by a very small margin, not once but twice.

  2. 1) Has a boyish and the good looks of a Korean star. Nothing to impress.

    2) His method of housing has brought great grieve to a large number of people. What he set out to do about stabilizing the price in the properties has only always been temporary. Not able to supply affordable and available public housing to the masses, using the private property as a scapegoat. Lack empathy and compassion.

    3) I don't know what to say.

    4) Who is he? Only heard of him during the last election.

  3. Lee Kuan Yew's 'Hard Truths'.

On Muslims in Singapore-In those days, you didn’t have a school tuckshop, so you bought two cents of nasi lemak and you ate it. And there was a kway teow man and so on. But now, you go to schools with Malay and Chinese, there’s a halal and non-halal segment and so too, the universities. And they tend to sit separately, not to be contaminated. All that becomes a social divide. Now I’m not saying right or wrong, I’m saying that’s the demands of the religion but the consequences are a veil across and I think it was designed to be so. Islam is exclusive.”

On the art of governance- "Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in him. Or give it up. This is not a game of cards. This is your life and mine. I've spent a whole lifetime building this and as long as I'm in charge, nobody is going to knock it down."

On governing- "You've got to do one of two things when you've got to keep people happy: either, give them something that will satisfy them, better food, better clothes, better homes; or if you can't do that, then give them the vision of greatness to come"

What are our priorities? First, the welfare, the survival of the people.

On whether he was proud of his son being the PM- "Yeah, but at the same time, I must be very careful that he is not going to smudge the record.. Well, he has got a tough time, but he has got more resources than I had when I started."

  5. How good a PM he can only do so much. He is not GOD. If PAP wants to send any suicide squad, that is their right. The ppl have their own rights at the polls. True or not?

  6. It should not be something that has to be rush on impulse as there are deadly precipitating factors to consider. There is no clear distinction between 3G and 4G.

  7. The general trend would be the juniors are more answerable to the seniors and influential ministers or bosses. What is certain is Law, MAS, Defence.......... would still go about doing things the only way they knew, even when any four become PM? Awkward. Can they speak without fear or favour when a senior or ministry slide in their duties? Their older ones attitude would be, "what do you know?"

  8. PM Lee and Ministers were stunned by last year's election results, though he held a steady composure. Despite the starting of a deadly pandemic and the expenditure of 90 billion, it did not move the voters?

His wife must be greatly disappointed. Her plans to leave Temasek perhaps to spend some personal time as a family, thinking that PM was stepping down soon?

  9. Outstanding leaders have the unconventionally attributes to create wealth not only for their country but also a moral obligation to enrich the lives of the people.

What we have now is only how to collect money from its own people and businesses, where the people are classified as in what kind of manner in which to receive handouts.

    Like that I also can.
