“SMS: We noticed multiple transactions on your e-commerce account. We can provide a refund if it’s not purchased by you. We will need your 🚩*credit/debit card details* and 🚩*OTP* in order to process the refund.”
What might you do? (a) willingly provide them with the information; Or (b) ignore their request
Most people would (b) ignore this message upon checking and realising there is no such transaction, or if they recognise it upfront as a scam.
Others may not check and become scared that they have lost money. They then panic and trustingly follow the instructions from the fake "e-commerce staff" and provide all the info, hoping to get their money back. Sadly, by providing their card details and OTP, victims are allowing scammers to use their credit/debit cards for fraudulent online purchases, which is what they feared to begin with.
What seems like legitimate customer service is actually a phishing attempt to get your card details.
Always stay alert, keep your guard up, and don't be fooled!
