I strongly agree

The opening sentence of a letter in the newspaper said, "I could not agree more ....".

I have the habit of reading quickly. I was somewhat confused with this statement. I thought that the writer was expressing disagreement.

Normally, I prefer to write in the positive, such as "I strongly agree".

  1. This is the beauty of the English Language, Mr. Tan.

I could not have been more fortunate....

I could not have been more delighted with the proposal.

Of course, like you, I prefer simple and more straightforward construction of English sentences.

If Professor Higgins were still alive, I wonder what he would have thought of Singlish?
