Signs at MRT stations

I am confused with the Exit and Way Out signs at MRT stations. What do they mean, and why two different descriptions? Are they put up by two separate agencies, i.e. LTA and SMRT - each want their own way?

    If I am not mistaken, the 'Exit' sign is a requirement by BCA. The 'Way Out' sign is most likely by SMRT.

    as mentioned, i believe one is a fire exit sign, while the other is just a general direction towards the exit. where i guess will be another fire exit sign
