Hike in taxi fares

I like the articles written by Lucky Tan. We both share the same philosophy about what is right and what is good. Here are his views about the hike in taxi fares. He said that it is better to allow taxi drivers to work for themselves, rather than to hire a taxi from a taxi company. What are your views?

  1. Think it would serve commuters well if we have one cooperative style taxi Company, where all drivers are shareholders, socialist style.
Once a Taxi Company goes publicly listed, it's the bottom line that is paramount and the shareholders demand high dividend returns.
A cooperative could give sick leave benefits to its drivers, and where the other relief drivers could take over in the interim to pay the rental.
At financial year end, dividend could even be paid out to the driver shareholders.A happy cooperative driver would give better service to the commuter.
Right now Singapore has one of the worst taxi service in the world, the fare and the surcharges could be infuriating and messy, leading to misunderstandings and arguments.

  2. What happened to the taxi cooperative where drivers are members and share in its profits? How did it turn into a corporation where drivers are production units and management rake in obscene salaries?
