First 50 days of President Biden

I admire the leadership and boldness of President Biden. This opinion writer shares the same view.

Opinion Columnist

I think it’s a good exercise to return to your past predictions and analyses and take stock of what you got right and what you got wrong. In my case, looking back at what I wrote during the Democratic presidential primaries, I got one big thing wrong.

Joe Biden.

In 2019, I wrote that “the possibility of defeating Trump without defeating Trumpism looms over Joe Biden’s possible run for the 2020 Democratic nomination.” That a campaign centered on Biden’s appeal to white, blue-collar workers was a campaign that would recapitulate the conceit of “Make America Great Again” under the guise of rejecting it. And I worried, throughout the campaign, that Biden was simply not inclined to make the changes and force the confrontations necessary to de-Trumpify the government, much less push the country away from its austerity mind-set.

Looking at Biden’s nominations, appointments and executive actions thus far — looking at the size and scope of the relief bill and the extent to which he outright ignored Republican demands to make it smaller and less generous — it turns out I was wrong! I greatly underestimated Biden’s inclination and ability to do these things.

It is clear that Biden sees the presidency not as a capstone to a long career, but as a final opportunity to make his mark on the country, and he intends to do so. If these first 50 days are a sign of what’s to come, then his mark will be a much greater one than I could have ever anticipated.

Analyst report on Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (BS6.SI)

A friend sent me this analyst report about Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (BS6.SI). The order book is excellent. It reinforced my decision to invest $120,000 in this stock. Part of it came from my SRS funds.

New stock purchases

Make Singapore a car lite city

I agree with this approach to make Singapore car-lite and create more space for cycling and walking.

I suggest that the government should build tunnels for walking, using the low cost tunneling method developed by Elon Musk's Boring Company.
The cost of the tunnel is SGD $10 million per km. The tunnels are free from the sun and rain.
More people will be willing to walk long distance in the underground tunnels.

Quora: What has China done to the USA for the USA to be tough with it?

John Fenn, lived in California for 20 years, replied.

The Chinese have done a number of things wrong. This has really gotten the Americans totally flummoxed.

They have been wildly successful in bringing EVERYBODY out of poverty.
They care about EVERYBODY. All of them.
The will no longer kowtow to the US, nor anybody else.
They have developed non dollar trading mediums.
They have circumvented US hegemony
They have developed their own allies
They have pursued win win economic policy with their neighbours
They have signed up half the world into the Belt and Road trading group.
They have stayed in their borders.
They are too big to attack.
They provide the chain of supply for the US government and military.

And thanks to Felix Su :- Last but not least. They’re doing Capitalism better than the US. That isn’t allowed. How dare those Chinese go from Communism to Capitalism and beat the US in 50 years!
I could go on but ALL of these things are anathema to the Ferengi. The US hate success in others, especially when they cannot get a piece of the action. The US prefers a zero sum game. I win, You Lose.

Insane to use CorpPass

We need experienced and practical people to design systems and processes. We should not rely on inexperience people (including those with impressive paper qualifications)

WOTC - Covid vaccinations

Wisdom of the Crowd: 64% of the respondents were not concerned that Singapore was slow in rolling out the covid vaccinations.

One size fit all

It is better to have "two sizes fit all" rather than "one size fit all".

Keep in touch with reality

Singapore will continue to regress when the leaders and civil servants continue to live in the cloud and not keep in touch with reality.

Removal of CorpPass - at last!

Our Smart Nation people is not so smart after all. They wasted a lot of time and resources in introducing CorpPass which was unnecessary and wasteful.

A suspected phone scam

I received a call from an unknown number 94801749.

When I answered, a pre-recorded message said that my phone will stop service within a short time. I have to press 5 for more details.

I suspect that it is a scam.

I terminated the call. I called back the number. There was no answer.

I wonder if the Police will take the trouble to investigate this potential fraud, if I lodge a report?

Or, they will do nothing?

Note - I have lost trust in the Police and many government agencies in Singapore. They have become very bad under LHL's administration.

WOTC - Improve governance in Singapore

Wisdom of the Crowd: 56% of the respondents consider that more transparency and accountability as the most important change to improve the system of governance in Singapore.

WOTC - Petrol tax hike

Wisdom of the Crowd: 86% of the participants have a negative view of the petrol tax hike in Budget 2021.
