Covid Vaccination Letter

I read a newspaper article that seniors above age 70 will receive a letter to arrange for the covid vaccination.

Many of these seniors already have SingPass.

I suggest that they be notified through their SingPass and not by a physical letter.

Only those without SingPass need to be notified by letter.

This will reduce the volume of physical mail by perhaps 50%.

It is time to move towards a Smart Nation. We should not continue with outdated practices!

My investment in Barrick Gold and gold ETF

I invested a total of USD 192,000 in the following

SPDR Gold ETF $106,000
Barrick Gold $86,000
Total $192,000

My strategy was to hold 10% of my portfolion in gold and gold miner.

It turned out to be a bad strategy. I now have a paper loss of $30,000, representing 15% of my investment.

However, I will hold on to these investments for the near term
future.

My investment in China Petroleum

I hold 250,000 shares of China Petroleum (0386.HK) at an average cost of $4.06 HKD. Four months ago, the stock price reached a low of $2.95. I suffered a paper loss of $277,500 ($47,600 SGD).

I was not worried, as the stock had a price earning ratio of 8 times and a dividend yield of 9%. I could keep the stock for the attractive dividend and wait for the price to recover.
I did not have to wait long.
The price has now recovered to $4.36. Instead of a paper loss, I am now seeing a paper gain of $75,000 ($12,800 SGD).
I helped a friend to invest in this stock during the past few months. He has seen a large paper gain, and also look forward to an attractive yield.

How to turn your customers off

I saw an advertisement for digital subscription to the Straits Times at $9.90 per month.

My immediate reaction was - at last. SPH has now got the right business model. At $9.90 per month, I am willing to subscribe to the online platform and read the local news.

Previously, they offered a low subscription for 3 months and revert to a subscription of $60 or $90 a month. That is too high. I refused to subscribe to this kind of bait.

There was a link to read the Terms and Conditions. It was a very, very long document. After reading a few pages, I gave up. I did not want to subscribe to onerous terms and conditions.

SPH has, once again, turned me off.

This seems to be a bad habit among Singapore managers. They really know how to turn off their customers with impractical, unnecessary and onerous requirements.

You tell me. Singapore got future or not?

I sold Singapore REITS and invested in China stocks

Last month, I sold about $400,000 in Singapore REITS and invested the money in China stocks. The investment is doing well.

My investment in China stocks

This excludes my investment in Baidu listed in America which shows a good gain. I invested $6.1 million HKD ( $1.05 million SGD) in China stocks listed in Hong Kong. The current market value is break even compared to cost. It used to show a loss of 15% compared to market value.

This excludes my investment in Baidu listed in America which shows a good gain.
I prefer the China stocks because their average PE ratio is 5 to 6 times and dividend yield is over 4% (except for Alibaba). The PE ratio is less than half of Singapore stocks and one third of American stocks. I invested in the following stocks - China Mobile (0941), China Petroleum ((0386), China Railway (0390), Country Garden (2007), ICBC (1398), Kerry Property (0683). PICC P&C (2328) and Alibaba (9988). I expect these stocks to move up 50% in value when the US and international funds decided to move to emerging markets (i.e. China and other Asian markets). In the meantime, I can look forward to a good dividend yield. My China stocks moved an average of 2.5% today. I hope that this is the start of a trend to reflect the value of these stocks. https://fisca.sg/ArticleDisplay.aspx?ID=857

Quora: Why do 95% of Chinese trust their government, compared with just 48% in the US?

Kevin Anderson from Tasmania, Australia answered:
In my experience in China 100% of people that I met and discussed this with agreed with the government.
Kevin: how bad is pollution in China/here?
Local colleagues: it has been bad in the past. But recently it has improved. Next year it will be better.
Kevin: how good is the local/national leadership of the CCP.
Local colleagues: there have been mistakes in the past, but the current leadership, locally and nationally, is excellent. China chooses its political and administrative leaders on the basis of talent and qualifications.
Kevin: are there any current leaders or emerging leaders with a law background?
Local colleagues: No. Lawyers can’t build bridges or harvest crops.
Kevin: is food safety important to you and your family? How safe is food here in China?
Local colleagues: yes, food safety has been a big problem in the past. But under the current leadership all these problems have been solved. Oh, and by the way Kevin: when you go back to Australia can you buy powdered milk for me. When you return, I will buy any amount.
I have no experience of the US.
