Educate our young on "character"

Our education system focused on "excellence".

To be excellent, a student has to be top in the class. He have to compete against his classmates. Unconsciously, he learns to be self-centered and selfish.

I prefer an education system that is more balanced. Apart from excellence, it has to teach our students on "character". He has to learn to be considerate, to be generous, to be honest and to show concern for others.

well said.
our educational system teaches us to be selfish, to horde knowledge and not share it. we're not ready for the future.

Other countries started to learn from our education systems since not too long ago. So our education is not all that bad afterall. We are products from this system, I would like to remind! Didn't we survive this far?

Generally, it worked for a nation that is building up. For a nation buiding out, well, there is another matter. Where are our entrepreneurs? We have none! What we have are obedient civil-servants!

We should focus more on creative thinking; not by always following the "model answers/solutions".

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Singapore has become such a nation of result-orientation. It's a dog-eat-dog society. Everybody wants to get ahead. Nobody wants to be left behind. It's good to know there are still good men like you out there who believe in instilling good characters in our young. And not make them the by and large self-centered lot that we adults are.
