Focus on one incident without looking at the big picture

Tesla shares dropped by 3.5% due to a crash of a Tesla car in Texas leading to the death of two people.

This was a panic reaction.

The investors who panicked did not consider the following:

a) There was a crash involving a Tesla car, out of over 1 million Tesla cars on the road.

b) If there was a fault in the Tesla cars, you would expect a few thousand crashes every day.

c) Each day, 3,700 people die on car crashes on the road from all types of vehicles.

This is an example of focusing on one incident, and failing to look at the big picture.

Why China pays attention to the South China Sea

A foreigner, who is an expert on China, said the following in a video interview:

a) During the past centuries, China was a land power. But they did not build a navy to conquer other countries.

b) Around 1900, China was invaded by several European nations which come to China by sea.

c) China was worried that its trade routes would be choked if America use its strong navy to block access to China through the South China Sea and the Straits of Malacca.

d) To reduce this risk, China embarked on the Belt and Road initiatives to create new routes for its trade.

e) China also build military bases on the artificial islands in the South China Sea as a defensive measure.

I suspect that the economic resources in the South China Sea is another reason for China's interest, although this was not mentioned by the expert.

International Court ruling on the South China Sea

Many people remembered that China refused to accept the ruling of the International Court of Justice on the South China Sea. They considered it to be an aggressive and bullying act by the China government.

I believe that China has a reason to take this uncompromising stance in the South China Sea, but I do not wish, and indeed I am unable, to defend that position.

I only wish to point out that this is not the only instance that a large country or its allies did not follow the decisions or rulings of the United Nations or its agencies.

Look at the war on Iraq and also the actions taken by major powers in the Middle East.

If we study the number of occasions that any major power went against the majority views of the global community, we will find that China is probably more compromising than, for example America.

Quora: Is President Xi Jinping sincere?

Quora: When President XI says that China doesn’t wish any conflicts, nor it has any ambitions to rule the world, that it wants a peaceful rise and coexistence with the US, is he sincere?

Lance Chambers replied

I believe he is sincere.

China is the worlds largest manufacturer and they make a lot of money because that is what they are - one of the biggest money makers in the world. Peace would see Chinas trade increase dramatically whereas conflict and war stops trade and would make it a lot harder for China to continue to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

Xi and Biden have already been talking to each other and although Biden is taking a tough stance there is no animosity being shown. I hope that polite and sensible dialogue ensues.
