Free Public Transport

This article describes cities that have free public transport:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-fare_public_transport

A friend, who sent the information to me, confirmed that the information on Auckland is true:

Auckland, New Zealand
A free CBD loop service links the ferry terminus, railway station, universities, theatres, casino, galleries and shopping districts using hybrid electric buses. It operates from 8am to 6pm, 7 days, at 10 mins interval, but not all buses are hybrid.

The quality of service is quite good, although it does get crowded at certain time, eg. school hours, lunch time, etc.

Except for public parks and spaces, road traffic, police, library services and social welfare aid or see the MP, nothing operated by the government is free (direct sense) or will be free in Singapore. The word free does not exist in policy statements or speeches by ministers. The closest is subsidised. Subsidised mean sell less than market rate (subsidised HDB flat)or reduce petrol tax(petrol subsidy.
If you still can't pay, too bad, go and see MP (free).

Taking the user fee off urban transit is the best way to fix the problems of the auto and sprawl.

There is also a free CBD downtown loop in Brisbane. This was launched few yrs back in 2002/2003 when I was still studying there.
