Losing the competitive edge

Singapore has now dropped to fourth position. At one time, we were the top or number 2. More worrisome is the "high cost of living" which impact the people more. We fared very badly.

When a country is competitive from a foreign business's point of view, it is likely to be bad for the local people, e.g. depressed wages, long working hours, etc. We must not overlook this point.
The government's idea is that when more business comes into Singapore, they will create more jobs and give better pay, but these may not be the outcome, especially with immigration.

The drop in rankings for a number of metrics was not strange for me. We were going downhill for some years already. Just that we were too proud to admit and do something.
On the other hand, as Mr Tan pointed out, being second best or worse, can be a blessing for us True-blue Singaporeans in certain circumstances.
