License for taxi drivers

Malaysia is considering to issue taxi licenses to individual taxi drivers, instead of companies. The government thinks that this may be better for the welfare of the taxi drivers.

Saw a taxi driver relative who is sick but still have to work, at least the Company should give him rent- free a day or two off, backed by a MC.
But some drivers are the black sheep, they would use opportunity to use their cabs for private use, already some are driving just to cover the day's rent only, the other hours for ferrying their family around, esp with high COEs now.
A sticky problem, no solution yet.

This is actually very good and the individual taxi drivers can form a cooperative to pool resources together to get economy of scale for insurance, repairs, fuel and other operations. This could be a better model compared to the prevalent way whereby the services is never improved while the price for taxi keep increasing due partly to the taxi companies keep increasing the rentals of the taxi.

Cooperatives are better. Under current system taxi drivers have low morale starting each day to cover the killer rent before making a dime.

Being a cyclist myself, i find taxi drivers an impatient lot. Hurry here & there in desperate struggle to make more $$.

Being in service business is hard to improve productivity. Taxi drivers have to obey speed limits, traffic etc. Same fare whether is 1 or 4 passengers.

As s'pore economy become more & more service orientated it is harder & harder to have good productivity gains compared to manufacturing powerhuse S Korea.
