Medishield started in 1990 to provide insurance for catastrophic medical expenses. The co-payments was supposed to be covered by money in the CPF Medisave account.
The problem is that the medical expenses were too high. There were caps placed on the use of Medisave, to prevent too much money being siphoned out.
This result in the patient having to pay a large sum of money out of pocket.
In a recent case, a senior who opted for subsidised treatment for a cataract operation was able to claim for only $4.50 from Medishield.
He had to pay the balance of the post-subsidy bill of $4,477 out of Medisave and from his pocket. Medisave only paid $3,000, so the remaining sum of over $1,400 was paid out of pocket.
This is a complicated arrangement. l call it the "bits and pieces" payment system - some part paid here, some paid there. No wonder the people are confused with this system.
How can we fix this problem? How can we make MediShield cover all approved expenses with only a small co-payment from the Medisave account?
I have a solution. It is explained here.

Medisave have a responsibility to protect its member's money from unnecessary high claims from medical organisations
Agree. Medisave should be kept out of laymen hands & be given to GIC and Temasek to invest for future generations. Sick people cannot contribute much to GDP; Singapore cannot afford to spend too much on sick people.
Yes ,no need to protect medisave and let all the doctors and hospitals charge super high prices whenever they want and deplete all your medisave once you step into hospital.talk about GIC lol.HAHAHA.
Hahaha govt stupid to spend so much taxpayer money to build white elephant hospitals & overpaid doctors. So stupid to pay more for same medicine that other countries can get cheaper. Govt should close down all these hospitals, rent them out to collect money. Fire all those overpaid doctors. No more expensive hospitals & blood sucking doctors to suck Medisave. More important to save taxpayer money for gic & Temasek to invest. U forgot about Temasek lol.
Finally,Thankss for understanding why it is important to protect our CPF which is guarantee by the gov.By the way, gov. should increase gst because how to give 4% in interest when people dont encourage it to invest in gic or termasek as singapore ISLAND got no resourses eg. oil but full of people only.Maybe cpf should give 0 percent interest and dont invest.lol.
