Government should walk the talk

Minister Khaw Boon Wan said: “If they cannot find jobs, what is the point? You own a degree, but so what? That you can't eat it. If that cannot give you a good life, a good job, it is meaningless,”

Rather than discouraging young people to pursue a meaningless degree, the Government can take proactive steps as follows:

a) Change the practice in the civil service of limiting the career prospects of non-graduates who have good experience and competency in their field of work

b) Provide opportunities for non-graduates to pursue a long term career in the public service by offering them apprenticeship to develop the skills for their field of work and giving them the assurance of a career with good salary and prospects.

If attractive alternatives to a university degree are made available to those who are not academically inclined, we will not see the wastage of resources.

If many people can not secure jobs for themselves, that means job market is tight. It has nothing to do with whether a person has a degree or not.

Universities train their students well in specific fields, during thse trainings, they impart not only specialised knowledges but also intangible skills like critical thinking, logical steps towards solving a problem, how to conduct a research...If these skills could not land you a job in this lousy job market, please do not be discouraged, they are useful skills which will help you in your future endeavour.

I strongly believe that unemployment will be alleviated by the end of 2014. The situation is like 1987, 1994 and 2001. this downturn last longer because of excessive leverage and specualtions in all markets before 2008.

Most of the employers are just looking at the short-termed bottom line and very short sighted. They refuse to hire and train good candidates because they cost more. lack of experience is just a lame excuse.
