WOTC - Price of gold

The chart below shows the price of gold. It was at $1,500 USD at the start of the year. After 8 months, the price has gone up to $1,960, an increase of 30%.

Some people think that gold price will continue to increase because the value of the USD and other currencies will drop due to negative interest rate and the massive printing of money that is not backed by any assets. They refer to these money as fiat currencies.

Many analysts also expect the stock markets to crash during the next two months, due to the lockdown of the economy, the large numbers of unemployed people, closure of businesses and the economic recession.

When stocks fall, will investors rush to buy gold?

I give my views here.

Analysis of Electric Car Manufacturers

The most famous electric car manufacturer is Tesla motors.

What about the other EV manufacturers - BYD, Nio, Nikola and XPeng?

Here are some information. The information is sketchy.

Tesla is way ahead, followed by BYD and Nio.

Ensure that everybody has a job

The pandemic has disrupted the business environment around the world. Many tens of millions of jobs are lost. It will take a very long time for new jobs to be created to replace the lost jobs.

My common sense tells me that there is only one solution - at least for the next few years.

Understanding the high flying FAAMG stocks

The financial media use the acronym FAAMG to refer to the top tech stocks on NASDAQ.

They are Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Google (trading as Alphabet).

I have added two more tech stocks that are performing extremely well during the current pandemic - Netflix and Zoom.

Are these stocks of good value. Here are my views.

Taking a short position on Tesla

After Tesla announced its 5-1 stock split, the price jumped for $1,400 to $1,800. I sold off my 100 shares.

I decided to sell 90 shares short on CFD at $1,850. The price continued to increase to $2,150 last night. I lost more than $37,000 SGD on the short position.

Hidden fees - dishonest financial institution

I encountered a strange incident, which suggest that a financial institution is acting dishonestly.

I transferred $10,000 into my Plus500 account using my credit card. Prior to the transfer, I was assured by Plus500 that there is no fee charged for the transfer.

A month later, I noticed that the amount deducted from my credit card was $10,100.

Future of Hong Kong

I discussed about the future of Hong Kong with a friend who is familiar with the business conditions there.

He is convinced that China will do well in the future, and that Hong Kong will benefit from it.

Hong Kong can continue to play a useful role as a bridge for China to do business in the world. Some countries will still hesitate to do business directly in China, and will use Hong Kong as that bridge.

It is also in China's interest that Hong Kong can play a useful role.

He is convinced that Hong Kong will do well economically. I agree with his assessment.

Wisdom of the Crowd: 31% of respondents are willing to contribute 5% of working income towards unemployment insurance. 69% prefer other options.

Invest in gold mine shares

I watched two videos from Peter Schiff. He forecast the impending collapse of the US dollar due to their huge debt and the potential loss of their role as a reserve currency.

When that happens, he expect the price of gold to shoot up. An alternative to investing in gold is to invest in a gold mining company. He said that Warren Buffett has also moved in gold mine shares.

I found that Warren Buffett's company recently invested in Barrick Gold. It is a large gold mining company in Canada and has a large market capitalization.

Guideline for damages

The family of a patient who died from cancer has filed a claim against the hospital seeking $6.75 million in damages.

I hope that Parliament will provide a law or guidelines on how damages should be calculated for various kinds of claims on negligence.

This will remove uncertainty for the claimants and the parties that are being sued.

MAS should require the prospectus to be more useful - Sembcorp Marine Rights issue

Pages 22 to 37 of the offer document from the sole financial advisor (DBS) contain a description of the risk factors put forward by the directors. This is a total of 15 pages that the investor is required to read.

Risk Factors for Sembcorp Marine

Pages 22 to 37 of the offer document from the sole financial advisor (DBS) contain a description of the risk factors put forward by the directors. This is a total of 15 pages that the investor is required to read.

The headings for these risk factors are:

* Risk relating to the group business

* The Group and its customers, suppliers, vendors and other business partners are affected by external environment risks, including pandemics such as COV-19 pandemic

* The company is subject to liquidity risks

* The Group faces project management and execution risks

*The Group is subject to third party risks in respect of its contractors, suppliers and vendors of its projects

* The Group is exposed to credit risks and risk arising from credit term extended to its customers.

* The Group is exposed to foreign currency risks.

* The Group's business is capital intensive and may require additional financing in the future for growth

* The Group's leverage exposes it to various risks, including reducing available cash flow and the need to comply with restrictive covenants that may, among others, inhibit its ability to incur more debts or pay dividends

* The contracts in the order backing of the Group may be adjusted, cancelled, suspended and therefore, the order backlog is not necessarily indicative of future operating revenue of the Group

* There is intense competition and possible new competitors in the market segment in which the Group operates

* The Group may not be successful in implementing its future plans

* The Group may not be able to successfully integrate or achieve synergies from its investments or acquisitions, and may be exposed to contingent liabilities relating to the businesses it acquires.

* The Group faces the risk of insufficient insurance coverage

* The achievements of the Group's objectives and strategies depend significantly on its employees

* The Group is subject to international and local environment and safety regulations and risks

* The Group is exposed to potential liability arising from any damage, injury or death resulting from accidents or other causes.

* The Group has operations in emerging market countries and is subject to risks involved in such countries.

* The Group is affected by political risks in countries where it operates.

* The Group is subject to laws, government regulations and policies governing its operations and is required to obtain the relevant government permits, licenses and approvals.

* The interpretation and application of laws and regulations in the jurisdictions in which the Group operates may involve uncertainty.

* The Group is subject to risk of representational damage

* The Group may be involved in legal and other proceedings from time to time.

* The Group is subject to operational, business and political risks in Brazil where it operates

* Risks relating to an investment in the Rights, the Rights Issue and the Shares

I read through the 15 pages quickly and concluded that most of the motherhood statements are a waste of time and actually distract the reader from the real issues that should be addressed.

There are some useful information such as:

* The impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the operations of the Group.

* The current happenings in Brazil which has a significant impact on the Group.

I would have preferred the statement on Risk Factors to focus on the real issues. It could be stated as follows:

RISK FACTORS

The Group faces risks that are normally expected for a business that operate in several countries and deal with several business partners.

The exceptional risks that require the attention of the investors are as follows:

I hope that we can get away from mindless nonsense and provide the information that are important for shareholders and investors to make their decisions.

MAS should take the responsibility - rights issue for Sembcorp Marine

I was asked for my view about the right issue of Sembcorp Marine.

I saw a document from the sole financial adviser, lead manager and underwriter, DBS comprising of 107 pages and 32 pages of appendices, totaling 139 pages.

The investor is required to read the 139 pages, and to consult their adviser, before deciding whether or not to take up the rights issue.

What are the parts played by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the Secruities Industry Council and the Singapore Exchange on this matter?

Attitude towards Malaysian workers

A local Singaporean was unhappy that Malaysians come to work in Singapore, each an income in SGD which can be converted three times to MYR.

The Malaysian is able to afford a good house and low cost of living in Singapore. He takes over jobs that could have been done by a local.

Authentication of documents

Opening the borders - setback from NZ

Singapore wants to start opening its borders. The first step is to allow travelers from New Zealand and Brunei to come into Singapore.

It has received an unexpected rebuff from New Zealand. The NZ government probably considers Singapore to be risky and does not encourage its residents to travel to Singapore at this time.

I want to share my response.

Look at the positive side

When I submit a suggestion for a change, I keep it short and simple, so that the main concept will come across clearly. I do not give every detail.

I get two kinds of response:
