Message from Tan Kin Lian

I congratulate Dr. Tony Tan for his success in this Presidential election.

I wish to thank the voters who have shown their confidence in me. The campaign has been a good experience for my campaign team and for me, and I was glad to meet many ordinary people in Singapore who has greeted me with warmth and friendship.

My family and I also thank all my campaign volunteers, supporters, donors and well wishers for their dedication, tireless energy and care throughout the campaign.

I will continue to demonstrate my care and concern for the people of Singapore and will strive to be the Voice of the People through other channels.

Tan Kin Lian
Candidate for Presidential Election, 2011

Thank you for the honorable fight and for giving us a choice! Please do not lose heart and instead continue to do your best for Singapore. Through your actions, you have shown me that Singaporeans are not apathetic -- that many of them care but just feel helpless. Thanks to you and all those who fought valiantly, we are now empowered!

加油,你的为民精神不是因选举而开始,所以我相信也不会因落选而放弃。我有把握没有总统名堂的你一定能更无私的为老百姓做得更多,更全面!敬礼

Hi Mr Tan, I feel that you have fought well and it will be an unforgettable experience for you. Considering that it is your first election, I sincerely feel that you have already done extremely well, just that the other candidates were very, very strong. I have been inspired greatly by your choice to step forward, and I hold you in high esteem. All the best to you Mr Tan! Continue to be the voice of the people!

I know some supporter wants you to set up a political party, and your reply is there are simply too many already.
Wiseman.
And about why you defeated - don't take into the view of your supporters. Politically neutral ordinary Singaporeans like me will tell you that partly because of product differentiation.

Dear Mr Tan,

First of all, do not be discouraged. Continue with your beliefs. As your supporter, I am really proud and happy that you came forward.

Next, I feel that even though the PE is non partisan and above politics, you can't avoid the fact that you still need to campaign to win votes. The short campaign period was a great disadvantage to you, an independent individual without a strong political affiliation, because there was simply not enough time to appeal to voters, formulate campaign strategies to win an election. This compared to your competitors where each of them has had the experience of fighting an election (exposure) and a substantial support base (guaranteed votes).

If you have plans to contest again either in the next GE or PE, I would strongly suggest you work on expanding and strengthening your support base. Being independent fits the role of the president on paper but it does not win you elections. One suggestion that I can think of is to continue to create awareness on insurance and financial matters. Despite your efforts of financial education through your blog/books/talks, there is still an awful lot of Singaporeans who are naïve in these matters. Maybe you can somehow expand upon what you already have and reach out to different segments of Singaporeans. This is your strong point and I think you should put it to good use.

Mr Tan, I voted for you. I know you are truly sincere about helping the common people of Singapore. Thank you for all the suggestions you made to help make the lives of Singaporeans better.

I hope you will write for more websites like Yahoo (which I frequent) because it would enable you to reach out to a wider audience. I think many locals out there are not too familiar with you.

Do keep us updated about the new website you're setting up (another avenue for our voices to be heard by the government). That said, I will definitely be visiting by your blog from now on.

Please take good care of yourself. We need a voice like yours to speak for us.

Dear Mr Tan

Thank you for stepping up to take part in the PE to give us a choice and a voice. We appreciate and are grateful to you for fighting so hard with your limited resources against a powerful state machinery. You may not have won but your courage and sincerity inspire us. Optimism is one of the values you uphold and I know you have grown stronger from this experience and are sincere in your promise to continue to be the voice of the people. Thank you once again and all the best to you and your family.
