Workers are afraid to lose their jobs, so they work longer hours. This is a bad system as it leads to a poor quality of life and makes it more difficult for the unemployed to find jobs. Read this report:

The solution is better protection of workers. Laws have to be passed and enforced to regulate the number of working hours, so that more jobs can be created for the unemployed and the new entrants to the job market.

You bring in more foreigners ... objective is to make them work at cheaper wages not necessarily more productive ... they also work more OT...if productive; not too bad, if not so productive ... productivity will naturally drop.
As a result of lower wages for foreigners, locals' wages will be marginalised. They also work longer hours to keep up.
At the end, all foreigners and locals all work longer hours. Not necessarily with higher productivity. But you have all sorts of ways to calculate and give a high GDP...this I am sure because the Govt claimed the GDP is so good which is why they had enjoyed high "performance" bonus the last few years...but how come at the same time they say your prodictivity is low and must improve by 2-3% annually for the next ten years so that your real income will improve by 30% in the next 10 years???
Wages get stagnated for the locals for the last 10 years. And inflation is currently over 5%...and you don't see similar wage increase to nullify the impact of inflation.
LKY said ‘Unless we have more babies, we need to accept immigrants’ ...
Why use this as an excuse to bring in more foreigners because they are cheaper? Not necessarily more productive. They then work long hours with OT.
Locals then work OT to catch up with their marginalised wages.
Why don't just ask all firms to dismiss their employees at 5pm sharp and let them go home to have more babies or go dating first...when GDP is not part of their Ministers' salary benchmark ... this will work...LOL.
Working shorter hours may boost birth rates.
In some Dept. when the CEO or Boss stays late, some fellow middle ranking staff or Sr. staff also stay back for fear of being blackmarked etc. It is indeed a frustrating ball game of "FEAR"
Employers would not agree.. although not many would openly say it.
They could always have a campaign.
Posters at bus stops to encourage romance and procreation, on buses, trains, TV and radio. But they dont.
Why?
1. Its the Chinese that is declining
They cannot just target them either!
Otherwise, the Indians, Malays will surpass in numbers.. then the ethnic composition of parliarment will change..
That is the true reason for import.. though it serves other purpose too.
