What does a CEO do?

A CEO is:

Chief Executive Officer - everybody knows that.

However, I have to play the following additional roles:

Chief Explanation Officer - when I write in my blog or send my reply to letters in the newspaper.

Chief Excuse Officer - when I have to explain mistakes made by my colleagues, and pacify my customers

Chief Education Officer - when I conduct public seminars on insurance matters.

and finally

Chief Entertainment Officer - when I have to boost the morale of my colleagues, in facing competition and demanding customers.

It is FUN.

Hi Mr Tan,

After reading what happen to NKF CEO, i wonder if NTUC CEO's salary is disclosed to public because NTUC is a cooperative society.

Could you care to point out where i could get the info on NTUC CEO's salary and travel perks?

I certainly hope NTUC will not be the next NKF.

NTUC CEO is different - he has many other roles, like Chief Explanation Officer, Chief Excuse Officer, etc. :)

Congratulations on perhaps being the first CEO from Singapore to blog!

I am sincerely glad you think the CEO’s job is fun.

I recall reading recently that given the high visibility and the pressures (multiple sources) on the CEO there are many capable and talented people who no longer wish to take on the job!

It's not easy being the CEO.

Mr Tan does it well because he is passionate about his work.

If I remember correctly, he describes his job as his "hobby".

Roles Of Chief Executives

Well, being a CEO myself, I see that we have quite a lot of things at hand.

We care about things - internal/external, staff/clients/partners/public, marketing/operations/technology/business development/customer service, making more/spending less.

As much as it is tiring at times, its the abilities to see growth of your company, your staffs and your clients at first hand that make it worthwhile.

You live life once.

This is a totally innovative way of looking at Mr. Tan’s job. Amazingly, he is able to fulfill all the tasks with flying colors.

It is really an extraordinary achievement!

He carries out the duties of CEO with zeal. He puts in effort to constantly update his blog and address issues posed to him. H

He is able to convince and pacify customers with his clockwork logic. Also, he takes time away from his busy schedule to educate the public on insurance matters.

In doing so, he has certainly succeeded in boosting internal morale and made NTUC Income more competitive. Kudos to him!

Allow me to say my final piece in this post. I just thought of something that Mr. Tan does as well!

Chief Entrepreneur Officer.

Mr. Tan’s entrepreneurial way of thinking has elevated the organization to even greater heights! His innovative ideas have let to highly efficient processes.

Elbert Hubbard once said – “He who influences the thought of his times influences the times that follow"

It cannot be more evident that Mr. Tan is a true leader of his time.
