Consumer banking and Teaching

A undergraduate approached me for advice. She will be graduating in a few months time, and has been offered a job in the Consumer Banking department. Her job was to stand by the ATM machine and to sell insurance products to the customers who went to withdraw money. She has to meet sales targets. She is worried about having to do this type of work and does not know if she can meet the sales target.

As a foreign student on scholarship, she is required to serve at three years bond to work in Singapore. Her career choices are limited. She does not know what to do. I advised her to consider taking a job in teaching.

Most foreign students who cannot find jobs or are retrenched will simply pack up and go home, absconding on the $60K to $80K grants they get from MOE for studying in local universities. I had a few ex-colleagues who are ironically victims of the govt bringing in tons of their own fellow countrymen to compete & depress their wages. They became tired of not being able to get the kind of salaries they want, despite 2nd upper honours from NTU. Many have simply resigned within 3 years and left S'pore without paying the pro-rated penalties and liquidated damages (10% interest rates). They told me that they don't intend to set foot back in S'pore as they know they will be arrested at immigration. I doubt if MOE or MHA will be able to track all these people down overseas, even if they want to spend the money and time to do so.

Its very sad to see bank hiring fresh graduates to peddle financial products to unwary heartland folks.

These fresh graduates are reduced to salesman desparate to meet quota and keep their job.

Why waste 3 years in the University to end up as a salesman peddling goods on the street?

I would advise her to just take the job and forget about meeting the quota. Pulling out all kind of excuses when the quota is not met and stay at the job as long as possible to get some living expenses. I would advise her not to feel guilty for doing so.
