Foreign students policy

http://www.temasekreview.com/2011/06/27/young-singaporeans-angry-at-dr-tony-tan-for-depriving-them-opportunities-at-home/

Quote

Due to Dr Tony Tan’s pro-foreigner education policies, many Singaporeans missed out on places in local universities and had to further their tertiary education overseas, a fact not lost on a NTU graduate who said:
“Tony Tan is responsible for one of the greatest policy errors that will cause great, untold harm to Singapore. His foreign students policies have caused an entire generation of Singaporeans to lose loyalty for Singapore.
Which citizens would not lose their feelings for the country if they are discriminated in the very country whom they have sacrificed 2.5 years of their lives under a humiliating military conscription service."

Mr Tan, I think you shouldn't put Mr Tony Tan in a bad light as it may cause you to lose some votes.

Dr. Tony Tan has been getting excellent comments, thanks to the SPH newpapers. So, he needs some negative comments to balance the positive comments. I will not give any negative comments on my own, but I will point out some relevant comments from elsewhere. If I lose some votes from this action, I have to accept the consequence.

I think his foreign student policies are aimed at forcing singaporeans to compete at the global stage. The draw back is that singaporeans who can't get into the local uni will have to settle for the really lousy jobs like being an admin assitant or some coordinator job. But if Singaporeans have good enough grades they should have no problems getting into unis here. There are so many more courses and the enrolments have expanded alot too.

The damage done is too late for some people.
My son who has to beg for a bursary from the German Govt to study for his Masters in NTU is taking up German and furiously upgrading his skills by working late, with one intention to leave Singapore and get a job in Europe.
The sight of most of his foreign mates in his NTU cohort, all on Singapore Govt scholarships pissed him off, if his own country don't recognise his skills, other countries would. No big deal, he said, after all we come from immigrant background, coming here also means going away too. No patriotic attachment to any country. Have skills, will travel. Great, proud to have a son like that. It's the Govt here that force these young and skilled citizens to be quitters.
Go on, open the door wider to pseudo FTs, while our young Talents are quitting the scene.

Sureesh, if you look at the evidence, there's no indication that the university reforms helped to improve the international ranking of NUS/NTU.

Why re-post a link that for sure will generate unhappiness?

To me, a president must have a generous heart. A unifying figure should not act like this.

I am very sadden by this ‘ungentlemanly’ behavior.

I think that the people of Singapore should hear all relevant views - so that they can make an informed decision. I am sure that TT will have the chance to address the concerns of the citizens on this issue.

Initially I was quite upset with the SPH for accusing you of posting negative comments about Dr Tan. I don't believe it. I thought they were biased.

Unfortunately, after scanning through your blog yesterday, the newspaper seem to be telling the truth. This is somehow not very healthy as it will generate angry sentiment for our fellow citizens. This should not be the role of a unifying figure.
