The meaning of public service

I wish to explain my concept of public service and to introduce an idea for a new charity to help poor families to pay the school fees of their children and hospital bills of the elderly people.

It will be funded by a significant portion of the salary of the President, if I were to be elected into this office, and will seek  the support of many kind hearted and wealthy people in Singapore. Read here.

Dear Mr Tan

I wrote 1n your blog before and I am a frequent visitor to your blog.

You have revealed a lot about who you are and what you stand for.

I am indeed very impressed by your idea of public service. Your idea of giving part of the President's salary to help the poor sets the tone for public service and paves the way for others to emulate this good example.

Our country has become so hollow and shallow and all that we care for is about numbers and dollars. We have lost the love for others and we have become so self-centred. We relentlessly pursue wealth. We pride ourselves as the nation with the highest density of millionaires.

I sensed there's a lot of mis-givings and hurts amongst many citizens. Our country seems quite polarised and divided between the rich and the poor, the capable and not so capable. And this gap between us seems to be widening...

We need a good leader with a heart of compassion for the less capable and less privileged. We need a leader who can unify all of us so that we can feel this is where we belong and why we are defending this place.

Go for it, Mr Tan, if this is your noble intention of public service. You win my vote as well as many other, I am sure!

Dear Mr Tan,
Hope you can show accountability & transparency if you are elected as President in the highest office. Be a people's President ready to make sacrifice, serve the people, community & society, show humility, honesty, compassion, patience, kindness, charitably, etc. Pledge more than 50% of your monthly salary to help the poor, elderly, homeless, neglected, unfortunate, lowly, abandoned people in the society. Be a President where generation after generation of people can remember, admire & honour you in present & future. I think with your current age now, you don't need so much money to live a modest & normal life as your current fortune can sustain your daily life.

Remember that the President post is not a political office. While raising issues you can inevitably policise the issues which may incur the wrath of the ruling party.
The President is impartial, ceremonial and the ONLY issue that the president can veto is anything about the reserve. It must also be reasonable because the govt can evoke provisions in the constitution to remove the president if he or she is found to be hostile to the executive arm of the govt.
It is thin ice, so tread carefully.

Ma ma Mia, it's great news. Hope you would make a sizable portion of the President's pay to this Fund for the poor.
Our family will vote for you should you stand for EP. Never hear of our leaders donating money for the poor out of their ridiculously bloated pay.
God bless you and your family. Hope the PAP would be gracious to allow you as a candidate. Got to bring back a human face to society here.
