MediShield

Medishield is a medical insurance scheme operated by Central Provident Fund. It pays 80% to 90% of hospital bills above $1,000/ $1,500. It covers daily charges up to $250 per day ($500 for intensive care) and up to certain limits for surgery, implants, radiosurgery and outpatients.

There is an option for you to buy a private Shield plan (instead of MediShield) to get higher coverage. You have to pay a higher premium.

Dear Mr Tan,

Not sure if you are aware of this detail. For Enhanced Incomeshield, for Outpatient Treatments, medication is not claimable. Only treatment costs. As such, if one goes for chemo, the chemo medication is claimable, because it is part of the treatment. BUT, what if the doctor prescribes other medication, to be taken daily, to reduce the side effects of chemo. Are such medication claimable?

What I find very troubling is that nowhere in the contract is it stated that medication is not claimable for Outpatient Treatment. The contract states "As Charged", which most normal people will read to mean "anything on the bill". The only thing stated clearly on the contract is that consultation charges cannot be claimed. You can see the contract details from Income's website.

With the government implementing means testing soon, I wonder how many people will be caught with a financial situation, when they realise this condition at the time they need the insurance most.

Do you know if the above is true? If it really is, you may want to make it known to readers of your blog, to let them know before they get a rude shock in the future.

Regards.
