How do you expect your changes to be implemented?

Someone asked me - Mr. Tan, you have made many suggestions to change many government policies and strategies. How do you expect to get these changes implemented, if you do not become the prime minister? Frankly, you chance of being PM is quite low, isn't it?

Quora: What is China's strategy?

Quora: What is China's strategy in aggressively announcing it requires complete removal of all tariffs for a deal to end the trade war right after an amicable meeting at the G20 between President Trump and Xi where it already got concessions on Huawei?

Ridzwan Abdul Rahman, Self employed (2000-present)
Answered

China went into the G20 meeting with the US after having announced three terms that must be fulfilled before an agreement can be signed:

- Remove sanctions on Huawei
- Remove all tariffs (both sides)
- Do not persuade China to buy more than what was agreed in December 2018

Trump agreed to remove the sanctions on Huawei, not just because China asked for it but also because the affected US companies asked for it.

Trump did not agree to the removal of tariffs and we don’t know if the US team will continue to pressure China to buy more.

So China is not asking for something new other than what they presented to the US team at the G20 meeting. After all, what is the point of having an agreement if the tariffs remain.

Dealing with a fake account in Facebook Messenger

If you receive a message from a friend, e.g. through Facebook messenger, and you suspect that the message is being sent by a fake account, this is what you should do.

You should send a message, using Facebook or email, to tell your friend about the suspected fake profile.

Your friend can inform Facebook that the profile is fake. Facebook will be able to remove it immediately.

If someone created a fake profile pretending to be you, and you learn about it, you do not need to send a message to warn all your friends. Just tell Facebook about it, and Facebook will remove that profile.

Fake profile in Facebook messenger

Someone created a profile in Messenger pretending to be me.

A friend spotted it and informed Facebook that the profile is fake. Facebook contacted me. I confirmed that I did not create a new profile.

Facebook removed that profile.

I expect Facebook to implement measures to verify the identity of the person who created a profile. This will probably take them some time.

I did not send any message to my ten thousand over fans to warn them about that fake profile. If they come across a profile that does not appear to be from me, I am sure that they would just ignore it or they could alert me. I will be able to tell Facebook that it is fake.

I do not over-react to people who create fake profiles by sending large number of messages to warn my friends.

Lessons from the Woodlands double murder

If the accused had gambled in the integrated resorts, many people would use it as a reason to blame the government for the tragedy of the double murder. He did not. So, the government did not get the blame. But he did gambled in other conventional ways.

I do not want to blame the government for allowing this tragedy to happen.

However, I like to point out that this tragedy highlights the weakness in our support system.

Double murder in Woodlands highlight need for financial planning

You must have followed the news about the double murder in Woodlands and the criminal trial of the husband and father who had admitted to the murders.

He was in financial distress partly due to gambling. But I suspect that the main cause was the loss of income from his job. He must have taken to gambling in the hope of earning some income.

I do not wish to comment on the relationship within the family.

However, I want to point out that the risk of a severe loss of income due to loss of job or poor business affects every working person.

The consequence can be quite harsh in the absence of a good system to provide support and financial assistance to families in need.

It is very important for every young family to have proper financial planning to deal with this big risk.

I advise young people to attend this talk on financial planning - so that you can be financially strong to deal with this risk.

Do not ignore this risk. Attend this talk and follow the simple ten tips. They are usually.

Parents should send their adult children to attend this talk as well.

Quora: Will Donald Trump win the trade war against Huawei?

Stephanie Smith, Council on Foreign Relations answered.

Donald is such a strange character.

On Saturday at G20 he announced US companies would be allowed to sell goods to Huawei. On Tuesday he sends email to Commerce Department to reiterate there is no change in policy.

So basically he wants the election support of US companies and workers suffering under his trade war. And he needed something to announce from the meeting with Xi, under which is threatened to throw another crazy tantrum if Xi didn’t meet him to give him a photo opportunity at G20. But really, Donald has no idea what he is doing. If he keeps up the tariffs and doesn’t repair some bridges, China completely cuts US out of its entire technology stack and ecosystem. If he allows US companies to trade with China again, he faces a backlash from his support base, that are convinced that all their problems are because Chinese people are working too hard.

I think why this issue is such a central issue globally, is because is strikes to the heart of globalization. Take for instance microchips. The microchips that US produces at Intel, Qualcom, etc are not so high tech that they cannot be produced in China. It is just because they have been around for so long, that it doesn’t make sense for China to build all the factories to make them, when there is already scale production in USA. These are commoditized products. It strikes to the heart of globalization, specialization and trade.

Once China is forced to make even its own chips to replace all these little commodity products of Intel and Qualcom, the US companies are in a world of pain. Investors are too short-term minded to think or care, but it basically has doomed the US companies, it is practically impossible for them to compete cost/profit wise with Chinese manufacturers.

Quora: What does Trump stand to gain from trade war with China?

If China retaliates, what would be the effect?

Lance Chambers Answered Jun 26

China is retaliating and quite effectively. Please be aware that retaliation isn’t always one slap given - one slap received. It can be a lot of different reactions to different attacks.

Trump place tariffs on China and then the Chinese government tells the Chinese people that they should reconsider buying Apple iPhones - iPhone sales in China drop to zero.

Trump tells the world that China steals IP (which isn’t true by the way) and China increase sales to Europe, aligns with Russia, stops buying American Soybeans and buys them from Brazil instead. America bans the purchases of Huawei equipment in the US.

Trump is trying to gain credibility as the American president while China is trying to grow so it can improve the quality of life of Chinese citizens.

America feels that China is a threat to their position in the world while China wants to expand the worlds trade routes to allow poor nations to trade more easily and cheaply.

So many different objectives with different points of view on how to achieve

Quora - Trump ease ban on Huawei

George Hsia, Freelancer (2003-present)
He smelled danger. His trade war with China pleases nobody except those cold-war hawks, who have been trying to fool him to fight China (and Russia, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, etc.). But he seems to have realized that China is too powerful, and the trade war with China will leave him little chance to win the coming election (something that was already pretty low but the trade war will make his chance worse the longer this goes on) — because of the trade war, farmers are abandoning him, and so are business people, especially in the hi-tech sector, the manufacturing industry, and wholesale businesses.

An incident near Midview City

Yesterday, I was walking along the path from Midview city to the bus stop.

A young couple passed me. The man appeared to be a foreigner and the girl looked like a local. The girl appeared drowsy and the man was holding up her arm as they walked by.

Something did not seem right.

I stopped and looked back. They had stopped a few meters down the path. The girl seemed to be resisting the man who was trying to hold her.

What should I do?

I walked towards them. The man looked at me. I asked - is there any problem?
He replied - no sir.
I asked the girl - are you all right.
She hesitated and said - I am ok.
I walked away. I hope that she is all right.

I know that some people will advise me - be careful, do not meddle in other people's business.

I am willing to take a small amount of risk. What if the girl really needed some help?

Anyway, did you read in the newspaper that an elderly man was beaten up by a young man near Midview City. You did not, right?

Maybe next time! Hahaha.

Listening to customers

When I was running an insurance company, I got my staff to adopt the 3 level escalation approach.

The staff at the first level answered the questions posed by the customers.

If the customer did not accept our answer or practice, the staff escalated the issue to the manager.

The manager talked to the customer and tried to find a solution.

If this was not possible, the manager escalated the issue to me.

The manager wrote the details of the issue in the email and described the source of the dispute.

I gave a reply to the customer. Sometimes, my reply was - call me at (this number).

Usually, we were able to resolve the issue.

Often the customer accepted our position, and was happy that his point of view was heard and properly considered.

I did not get many issues raised to my level - maybe an average of one issue a day.

That was how I get to know what was really happening on the ground.

Sometimes, I decided that our practice was unfair to customers. I changed it and issued a new FAQ to guide the staff.

This worked well.

Dealing with inflammation

Some 7 years ago, I suffered from pain in the leg. I thought that it was due to gout.

My doctor said that it was inflammation. He prescribed NSAID - non steroid anti inflamation drug.

It worked. I saw the doctor on subsequent attacks. He continued to prescribe NSAID.

Recently, I bought the drug (declofenac sodium) when I visit Malaysia. I don't know if the pharmacy in Singapore allows it without a prescription.

I have been using NSAID whenever the inflammation comes back. It works all the time.

I just check - what is steroid. I found this explanation:

Steroids are a man-made version of chemicals, known as hormones, that are made naturally in the human body. Steroids are designed to act like these hormones to reduce inflammation. They're also known as corticosteroids, and are different to anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders and athletes.

Now, what is non-steroid? Here is the explanation:

Non-steroid hormones are made of amino acids. They are not fat soluble, so they cannot diffuse across the plasma membrane of target cells. Instead, a non-steroid hormone binds to a receptor on the cell membrane (see Figure below). ... Most endocrine hormones are non-steroid hormones, including insulin and thyroid hormones.

High handed civil service.

I submitted a suggestion to the minister for law to allow third party funding for legal expenses involved in collected sales.

I received a reply, after one reminder, that they will consider the matter.

There was no reply for more than six months. I followed up to ask for a reply.

I finally received a reply after waiting for another month. The ministry replied that they have considered my suggestion and decided that there will be no interest from third party funders for this service.

How do they know, if they do not want to give it a try? It is not difficult for the minister to use his authority (for which he has already been given) to make this extension.

During the past many months, there was no attempt by the ministry of law officers to call me to discuss the matter. After getting their final reply, there was no way for me to follow up.

This is a deplorable standard of public service. It is an arrogant attitude.

I am not anti-establishment. But if the public service continue to operate in this way, you can be sure that I will be speaking out against their arrogance and high handedness.

Change to Internal Security Act

The government's view is that they need the Internal Security Act to deal with criminals and terrorists, as it may be difficult to provide sufficient evidence to convince the court of their harmful activities.

I accept the position of the government that they need a separate law to deal with this matter.

However, many people believe that the current law has been abused by the government to put political dissidents and opponents under long detention, when they do not pose any security risk to society.

Here is the latest update on the energy used by the Mi smart band.

The battery level was 70% last night. This morning, it still showed 70%. There was no energy consumed.

The smart band was recording my sleep night. It reported the hours of deep and light sleep.

I kept my mobile phone far away, so that it does not charge the band wirelessly.

It seemed that the band was able to carry out its monitoring without of the sleep without consuming any energy. Surprise!

Perhaps the reading is flawed. I wonder!

Anyway, I will not be charging the band until the battery runs out. I have used it for over three days, and it only consumed 30% of the battery.

I wonder if the Mi band found a way to charge the battery using the electro magnetic fields that must be created by other devices.

Truce in US China trade war

A China-U.S. Trade Truce Could Enshrine a Global Economic Shift
President Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, meeting on Saturday in Osaka, Japan.

President Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, meeting on Saturday in Osaka, Japan.

OSAKA, Japan — The spin from President Trump and China’s propaganda machines on Saturday portrayed a truce in a trade war that has shaken economies and markets around the world. Tariffs won’t rise further, at least not yet. And the United States will loosen its potentially devastating punishments against Huawei, China’s most successful multinational company.

Yet the outlines of the tentative peace accord President Trump reached on Saturday with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, could further cement a broad reshuffling of the global economic order that undermines China’s decades-long role as the world’s factory floor.

The details of the discussions between Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Osaka, Japan, still are not clear. The two sides have agreed to resume talks, but the ultimate results are not guaranteed. Their differences could still derail a fragile peace in an economic conflict that has thrown a shadow over the outlook for global growth.

Even a fragile truce could have lingering implications. The United States would keep in place broad tariffs on Chinese goods for months or perhaps years to come. Global companies would almost certainly respond by continuing to shift at least the final stages of their supply chains out of China.

Scam involving taxi licence in New York

The phone call that ruined Mohammed Hoque’s life came in April 2014 as he began another long day driving a New York City taxi, a job he had held since emigrating from Bangladesh nine years earlier.

The call came from a prominent businessman who was selling a medallion, the coveted city permit that allows a driver to own a yellow cab instead of working for someone else. If Mr. Hoque gave him $50,000 that day, he promised to arrange a loan for the purchase.

After years chafing under bosses he hated, Mr. Hoque thought his dreams of wealth and independence were coming true. He emptied his bank account, borrowed from friends and hurried to the man’s office in Astoria, Queens. Mr. Hoque handed over a check and received a stack of papers. He signed his name and left, eager to tell his wife.

Mr. Hoque made about $30,000 that year. He had no idea, he said later, that he had just signed a contract that required him to pay $1.7 million.

Over the past year, a spate of suicides by taxi drivers in New York City has highlighted in brutal terms the overwhelming debt and financial plight of medallion owners. All along, officials have blamed the crisis on competition from ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Lyft.

But a New York Times investigation found much of the devastation can be traced to a handful of powerful industry leaders who steadily and artificially drove up the price of taxi medallions, creating a bubble that eventually burst. Over more than a decade, they channeled thousands of drivers into reckless loans and extracted hundreds of millions of dollars before the market collapsed.

These business practices generated huge profits for bankers, brokers, lawyers, investors, fleet owners and debt collectors. The leaders of nonprofit credit unions became multimillionaires. Medallion brokers grew rich enough to buy yachts and waterfront properties. One of the most successful bankers hired the rap star Nicki Minaj to perform at a family party.

But the methods stripped immigrant families of their life savings, crushed drivers under debt they could not repay and engulfed an industry that has long defined New York. More than 950 medallion owners have filed for bankruptcy, according to a Times analysis of court records. Thousands more are barely hanging on.

The practices were strikingly similar to those behind the housing market crash that led to the 2008 global economic meltdown: Banks and loosely regulated private lenders wrote risky loans and encouraged frequent refinancing; drivers took on debt they could not afford, under terms they often did not understand.

Some big banks even entered the taxi industry in the aftermath of the housing crash, seeking a new market, with new borrowers.

The combination of easy money, eager borrowers and the lure of a rare asset helped prices soar far above what medallions were really worth. Some industry leaders fed the frenzy by purposefully overpaying for medallions in order to inflate prices, The Times found.

Between 2002 and 2014, the price of a medallion rose to more than $1 million from $200,000, even though city records showed that driver incomes barely changed.

About 4,000 drivers bought medallions in that period, records show. They were excited to buy, but they were enticed by a dubious premise.

“The whole thing was like a Ponzi scheme because it totally depended on the value going up,” said Haywood Miller, a debt specialist who has consulted for both borrowers and lenders. “The part that wasn’t fair was the guy who’s buying is an immigrant, maybe someone who couldn’t speak English. They were conned.”

What's wrong with 'the FT policy"

Someone asked to comment on the govt "FT policy". I do not know what he meant by the "FT policy".

I suppose he wants my opinion about the govt's approach to allowing foreign workers to work in Singapore.

Making changes in Singapore

Someone asked me - I have read your suggestions on the many things that are wrong in Singapore and need to be changed. Some of your suggestions will take a long time to be implemented and some may not work at all. If you are in charge, what can you really do?

Here is my reply.

Learn from New York Times on getting subscriptions

I just subscribed to New York Times for $1 USD a week for 1 year. After 1 year, it increases to $3 a week. I am allowed to cancel the subscription at any time.
I find the weekly fee to be fair and attractive. That is why I signed.
I may continue after the first year at $3 a week, as I find it to be acceptable. However, I will decide later. It depends on how often I access the website.
The registration procedure is simple. I am allowed to sign in with Facebook, which I did. I pay using Paypal.
The entire process was completed within 1 minute.
I like to give this suggestion to Singapore Press Holdings. Follow the New York Times. You are likely to get more subscribers to your newspapers.
As a feedback. A week ago, I tried to sign up with Business Times. I gave up as I find the pricing (after the promotion period) to be too high. The registration process was complicated.

Employ contract inspectors to check for mosquito breeding

I suspect that we have a mosquito problem due to the large numbers of construction sites.

Households can also be contributing to this problem.

NEA is probably overwhelmed and cannot cope with the inspection work.

I make this suggestion to deal with this problem

Allow members to take out CPF savings at 55

I suggested that CPF members be allowed to take out all of their savings at 55.

This suggestion has the support of about 86% of respondents to a poll. The other 16% were worried that some of the members will spend away all of their savings and have to rely on welfare from the state. Roughly, one in six has misgivings about this idea.

This is how the risk can be managed, so that the members do not waste their savings in bad investments.

Create jobs as mentors

As the economy changes in the future, many existing jobs will be replaced by automation and higher productivity.

We need to create new jobs to allow people to be usefully employed and to improve the quality of life for the population at large.

What are these new jobs?

ASEAN pact to reduce marine waste

Well done, Thailand, for getting ASEAN to agree to this pact to reduce marine waste and protect the environment.

Asean has committed itself to reduce marine waste at both the nation and regional level.

The transboundary nature of environmental challenges, from marine debris to haze pollution, makes it impossible for any single country to solve the issue alone.

The first of its kind, the Bangkok Declaration that was adopted yesterday stressed Asean's concern over the rising level of marine debris, in particular marine plastic litter, on marine life, fishing, fisheries, and tourism. It said there is also an urgent need to understand the impact of microplastics on people.

Among the ways Asean aims to tackle the problem is to adopt a more holistic land-to-sea approach, strengthen research capabilities, enhance regional and international cooperation, and increase public awareness.

Thailand, which is Asean chair this year, chose sustainability as its theme for this summit, with delegates getting recycled paper notebooks and tote bags.

Suggestion to deal with youth unemployment

Youth unemployment is a serious problem in many countries and also in Singapore.

I have some suggestions on how to deal with this challenge.

https://tklcloud.com/Feedback/feedback2.aspx?id=1680

Young people are concerned about the environment

The young people around the world are worried about the environment.

I first observed this in the campaign by Bernie Sanders in 2016. He was able to attract many young people to support his campaign as he talked about the environment and climate change.

The young people in Singapore are also passionate about this issue.

Recently, I posted a simple message about not using plastic straw. It reached out to over 98,000 people. Many young people shared this message which went viral.

https://www.facebook.com/…/a.6901471077246…/2791347647604536

Most of the comments were positive. The young people appreciated this simple effort to pass the message

While we talk about the cost of living and jobs, we should also remember to talk about the environment, which is of great concern to young people.

Quora - can China effectively retaliate against Trump's tariffs?

George Tait Edwards
George Tait Edwards, Student of Asian Economic Miracles
1 Answer These Chinese leaders are not wrong.
Trump is turning the USA into a low-speed internet society. The 5G nationalised system Trump wanted is not going to happen. Instead, a fragmented US 5G system will be built by various enterprise and perhaps completed about a decade behind that of China.
2 Speed of the Hongmeng Ark OS
And have you noticed the Hongmeng Ark OS appears to be 60% faster than Android? See
The upgraded Huawei 5G and 6G is the way to a faster internet future of things and services, but that can no longer happen in the USA. But it will happen in China.
If China bans the use of Chinese software and hardware in the USA, and produces its own world-reaching high-tech components and systems, then America loses the only manufacturing advantage it now has in high-end computer devices.
3 Discussion: The Only Power Trump Possesses Is To Decrease the US Economy, and he’s doing that.

Working in the gig economy

Many people have the opinion that driving a private hire car or deliver food is a job of last resort. Older people who lost their jobs or young people who cannot find a job are forced to take up these jobs because they have to make a living.

We need to change this mindset.
