Population of Jeddah

I asked the hotel staff in Jeddah about the population of the city. They did not know. Most of them were "foreign talents". One told me a figure of 3 million, which seemed rather high.

I checked Google and found the answer here. It is one and a half million. It is the second largest city after Riyadh. Jeddah is on the coast of the Red Sea which separates Arabia from Africa.

Population figures of Middle east countries are not as accurate as we expect of countries like Singapore. This is because of the Bedouins, who traditionally, and many still are, live in tents because of their nomadic lifestyle. Bedouins are by Arab laws permitted to cross any Arab border into any Arab country. Their life-style is respected by all the Arab countries, as well as the Sahara's. Saudia Arabia also has a rather large number of illegal overstayers. Indonesians Pakistanis, Egyptians, Bangladeshis form a large proportion. Most of them are found in Mekkah and Medina. They work in restaurants and hotels.

Thus perhaps the reason why you were told the 3 million figure.
