Insurance for a child with Down syndrome

Hello Mr. Tan,

My youngest daugther has Down Syndrome. She attends normal mainstream school and has no congenital medical condition. We would like to plan for her future investment, especially when we are not around with her. Can you advise what insurance plan/life policy are available in Singapore or even overseas country?

REPLY

I suggest that you buy a fixed term annuity for your daughter. You can pay a single premium, and she will receive a monthly sum for a fixed number of years, say for 20 or 30 years. Your doctor can probably advise what is a suitable term based on her life expectancy.

As this is a fixed term annuity, the payment will continue to be made for the fixed term, regardless of the survival status.

You will probably find it difficult to get medical insurance to cover her medical expenses.

I just attended a dinner hosted by a university alumni association in Taipei. The food was catered from Children Are Us/ć–œæ†šć…’, a foundation started in 1995 by a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities (Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other dysfunctions) who were concerned about their long-term care.

The foundation provides vocational training for special kids age 16 and above and helps them integrate into society. There's even a unit that takes care of the ageing ones. Here's some description in English (more info in Chinese on their website):

The food tasted really good and was beautifully presented as well. All guests were given a packet of their delicious handmade cookies at the end of the dinner.

The foundation runs bakeries and restaurants staffed by people with developmental disabilities all over Taiwan.

Perhaps someone can start such a social enterprise in Singapore too.
