Reputation of Shopping Malls

Dear Mr. Tan
A land banking company is using temporary space in Vivocity. They seem to be using legitimate real estate to introduce land banking and high yield investment offerings. The same compay also uses space in Raffles City.

To what extent do the owners of these locations have a responsibility to ensure that the space they rent is used ethically and legally ?. And to what extent does their brand image suffer by being associated with non-ethical investment programs ?

Certain shopping malls in Singapore have a reputation for cheating consumers even though the majority of retailers in those locations are honest. High end brands wont move to those locations because of that reputation. Rents and reputation suffer accordingly. Some of these high end shopping malls should perhaps think about how many cheating retailers it takes to make a bad reputation.

Anonymous said...: It is a good point being brought up. If business in Spore has no ethic and poor standard in value, we will go down from what we have achieved soon.
On TV, there are so many advertisements in question, such as pawnshop, beauthy saloon and hair treatment, etc. They are not the kind of product the media should endorse because TV has powerful effect. Our TV company seemed to have least concern to maintain worldwide standard and not aware its duty in the society. In other country, no commercial material is allowed to be air in news program but Spore is unique. We have a lot, such as new TV program on offer. Similar act in other country will be fined. Public may not be able to tell which is news or commercial.
Spore citizens have not be provided choice for a wide range of service and product for reasons. From time to time, it is possible for unethical business to cheat the public with help of media who has low standard of self discipline due to lack of enforcement and consumers right.

Anonymous said...: I do not like VivoCity as it is too big to navigate around. I heard a lot of ppl goes there for the food thus the retail business suffers. Maybe some tenants already pulled out from there that's why the landlord is desperate to have someone to rent their space. The same goes to Raffles City. After their renovation, most retail stores are selling branded stuffs which I do not think alot of ppl can afford. Most ppl just go to Bugis to shop.; April 22, 2010 10:29 AM

The world, including Singapore, has changed drastically in terms of morality and integrity.
Everyone thinks of the short cut to wealth and power, and the govt is leading the way. They could not care less anyone gets cheated here.
The Taiwanese have a saying - Bu Jian Bu Chen Sang - If not crafty would not enter business.
So just have to open big, big eyes

A Singaporean said...: Some of the newer built and newer renovated shopping centers have gone too high class. I've seen stores where jeans selling for $200 and shorts selling for $80. I'm sure only the rich have the ability to spend money this way, and even then not all of them choose to buy stuff that are this expensive.
