I have driven a car for many years and have not seen any incident where the air bag has been triggered. Recently, I was involved in a moderate collision and the air bag did not activate. The best is the simple seatbelt. Yes.. the seatbelt saves the most lives every year, around the world.
Strict enforcement on wearing seatbelts have been proven the most cost effectiv and most important. Airbags is just a supplement and can never replace the seatbelt
There are 600,000 cars in Singapore. The cost of installing air bags is about $3,000 per car (if my information is correct). The total cost to make it mandatory for all cars to have air bags is $1,800 million. The number of lives saved should be quite small. Cars are usually driven relatively slowly in Singapore, due to road congestion and limited space. If we want to save lives, the $1,800 million can be better spent on health or in other ways.
The shoulder belt in most new cars can be adjusted on the side pillar to improve fit.
