1. Is NTUC Fairprice still playing a useful role in moderating prices
2. Which supermarket offers the best prices?

If Sheng Siong can sell for the same or cheaper than NTUC, and still make hundreds of millions of profits per year ... that means NTUC is no longer focused on minimising prices. It's a major player in an oligopoly in Singapore and is operating more like a corporation than a co-operative.

(PS: quite happy with my Sheng Siong shares & dividends --- they're a good way to keep up with inflation)

Supermarket that offers the best prices? Those in JB.

Cold Storage largely serves the western palate.

NTUC/NTUC Finest caters to both Eastern and Western groceries or household goods.
Most of their two supermarts' produce are duplicated.

Sheng Siong has an exclusion to heartlanders household food and products which cannot be found in either NTUC or Cold Storage.

Sheng Siong caters to the needs of the modest population. I stopped by Sheng Siong for the sizable varieties of seafood and life fishes in the tanks at reasonable prices. To eat out at restaurants for life seafood is a big budget.

The Japanese supermart sells the freshest food items, but the price is without a doubt costly.

More importantly, be content with what one can afford. Food is Food.
