I asked this question in the Wisdom of the Crowd:

Was streaming in education good for Singapore?

Here are the responses: (47 Votes)
49 % - We should look for other ways to handle students with different pace of learning.
34 % - It has been stressful for many families and is somewhat harmful.
13 % - It was a good way to handle students with different pace of learnings.
4 % - It has produced a favorable outcome in the quality of our students.

Our son went through a traumatic first three years of his primary school education. Streaming was at Primary three as according to his year end exam results.
Sonny was dyslexic. He got proficient in his A to Z alphabets, but he could not use the letters to form a word, or even recognise
the words in a sentence or a book. Unbelievably he could read and write Chinese.
One day he said he's not ever to attend school anymore. His teachers said he's stupid, and his classmate also taunted him. Went to see his teachers, who said dun know how to teach my son.
This panic stricken mum put up an advert in the MSM to search for someone to teach such children. A former teacher responded and diagnosed his condition as dyslexic only, not stupid. She would coach him, and guaranteed that sonny will be able to read at end of three months, on condition she and our son to be alone in the room, parents can't interfere.
Miraculously sonny finally could read and spell words, and he topped his class from being last at his final exams, and went on to the U with
ease. Luckily sonny has hands on parents who asked for help just in time.

Singapore is about streaming. If you earn more than certain amount you do not qualify for public housing. If you a single you can only buy 1 room when above certain age. Housing also got streaming.
