General Election 2010

The general election is widely expected to be held in the second half of 2010. Which party will you vote? Take part in this survey (now closed).
Here are the updated results of the survey, based on 100 replies. The results are quite close to the earlier report based on 58 replies. I have now added the general comments of 19 respondents.

Disclaimer: My blog attracts a higher proportion of people who are unhappy with the government. The results of this survey reflects this group, and may not reflect the general population.

The winner will always be there but my concern is: Will GST increase to 10%?

Anonymous said...

GST will be increased to 10% if the PAP govt receiving the wrong signal of getting more than 66.6% winning votes.

My concern is: PAP govt getting wrong signal & cost of living escalates out of control while salaries stagnate or marginal increase. The effects of these impact worse on retirees.

Mr Tan

I suggest you create a list of TOP 10 HOT ELECTION ISSUES to be followed daily in your blog...with survey ranking...until the countdown to "cooling-off" / polling day...and also hope this will help you hit your 2 Million Visitor very soon.

E.g.
(1) Affordability of HDB Flats
(2) Ridiculously High Ministers' Salaries
(3) Complacency in our Bucreaucracy (Why no spurs fixed)
(4) Rising PMETs unemployment and No retrenchment benefits.
(5) Employment of Older Workers
(6) Minimun Wage
(7) Rising cost of living but stagnant income

Etc...let's get more suggestions and see which 10 will stay on the billboard.

Of all who want to vote for other party, how many will have a chance to vote? Also of those who can get a chance to vote, how many are in public sector? This sector is the largest employer here, don't forget. :)

The gst you pay for your pub bill alone @7% can amount to more than 200-250 per year just for your home. Do you think it is a lrage sum of money??

According to the survey, 57% indicated that they voted for the PAP during past elections. The actual percentage in the 2006 election was 66.6%.

10% of the respondents said that they would vote for the PAP this time. The swing is so large that it should be quite frightening for the PAP.

Good news indeed. Shows that Singaporeans are not daft or kiasi.

Dear CH Yap
I have followed your suggestion and created a survey on the hot election issues.

When PAP wants to raise GST by 5%, we said no but they raise anyway.

When PAP raise GST to 7%, we said no but they said we already took the money.

When PAP raise ministers' pay the first time, we said expensive but they raise anyway.

When PAP raise ministers' pay the second time, we said expensive but PM said, judge ministers' performance and justify the raise during next election.

Election is coming. As of now, I don't know why they deserve such high salary as I don't know what they have done. All I know is they brought in 1.25 million foreigners and I am out of job for the last 3 years. Degree and diploma is no use as long as you are middle age.

So if I, a degree and diploma holder is jobless and struggling to find a job, do you think I will vote for PAP? All my previous votes has made me realized I voted the wrong party....

-> I think most respondents are educated Singaporeans that surf the Internet and are more aware issues facing the country.

The older generation >70 years, uneducated and primary school educated people, people where the GST refund credit is substantial as compared to what they earn will still vote for the PAP.

Rex comments as follows,

Hi Kin Lian,
Let us think about these numbers collected.
You said in your comment that the survey is not necessarily accurate and "may not reflect the general population".
But the figures show 57% of those surved DID vote PAP last time, this DOES reflect the general population of whom 66% DID vote for the PAP. 57 and 66 is not far apart.
Likewise, since now 90% of these 57% WON'T vote for PAP, it might be extrapolated that, the general population may well exhibit rejection rate of PAP at approximately 80% (to account for the difference between 57 and 66). Yes?

IF anything, i think these numbers collected prove that there is a probability of more than 50% that PAP cannot get 66% of the votes.

It does not matter if the sample consists of those who have grouse with the PAP or not when they come to the blog, in my opinion. What matters is the number who DID vote PAP in the last election. It is realistic since it is close to 66%.

Putting myself in PAP shoes, it will be easy to increase popularity just simply by looking at the grouses list summarised above and pretend to accept all of them, act humble for a while, go a soft way. The voters will forgive and give them another chance. We are all mostly kind and gullible subjects of King.

Knowing PAP, they will not act humble once the election date is announce. As usual, the PAP grassroot will know the date early and started all preparation. Too bad that their rallies are usually quiet since all they want to say is already in the Straits Times and things they dare not say [ministers' pay] will not be discussed.

My hope that my estate will have a opposition contesting so that I can do my part....

If you looked at the results of the survey, more than 40% of people does not have a chance to vote. How is the oppostition going to get any advantage out of this situation?

Anonymous said...

If the majority if not all polled in the survey to vote against the pap and did indeed vote likewise come election polling day, we will have a very interesting result.

-> The point is that the more you wayang, the more irritated the electorate becomes.

Look at the latest BP disaster, time has changed, the masses expect transparency and not pretense. It's better to be honest and talk about issues rather than pretend. Pretense can be counter production, just take the appointment of Goodyear for example, everyone knows it is wayang, this reflects even more badly on the establishment.

Dear Kin Lian
I feel we need a UNITED OPPOSITION though they maybe from different parties, maybe someone could bring them together to agree on one main manifesto. UNITED OPPOSITION in Parliament. Agree on the areas to make sure no 3 cornered fight and just contest 48% of the seats. Tell the people to vote these 48% in first, give PAP Majority now and see how credible are the 48%. If they are good than in the next election it is time for change. Currently people are reluctant to give opposition majority due to past experiences. Hope the opposition will plan carefully

The system is designed for success for the incumbent. Oppositions cannot agree on strategies because of personal agendas.

I think only a peacefull citizens'
march and ground swell can move things here.. but there are so many races, and religious beliefs that are already fractious lines.
The only common item would be money.

And money is already in the hands of many people through property flipping.. the unemployed, PMETs, and mature people are very insignificant to cause any swings.

We are not as united as we want to believe. The common grouse is money. but once that is marginally satisfied, we all walk away happy.
I just recieved notice of my GST package rebate of $200 ( the last one ) Am I happy? Yes!.. I have been unemployed for 18 months.. of course $200 helps!

Jobs is not the exact issue. Money is.

From unknown source: "REFLECTION OF A TYPICAL SINGAPOREAN - have a good laugh"

I am Ong Ah Tee living in Kampong Chai Chee
Life used to be simple an race!d HAPPY
I worked hard in my STUDIES
I learned A-B-C, and everything from 1, 2, and 3.
Primary school was quite easy I passed PSLE
Then I went to SECONDARY
The subjects include HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY
Physics, Biology and CHEMISTRY

After O levels I went to JC
They said you live in Singapore very LUCKY

This is a small humid tropical COUNTRY
Surrounded by unknown potential ENEMIES
Boys turned 18 must go to ARMY for the tour of duty
After that we may continue our Studies
The girls can just sit back, relax, and watch TV
They come to this world only to "lim kopi, kway jit chee"
No one lives on free meals or depends on CHARITY

I want to take up IT, but I had no money to go to University or Poly
So I went to work at FACTORY
Working hard to earn a little lousy SALARY
After CPF and INCOME TAX, I have just enough money to buy ROTI and ride in MRT.

My bosses show me no SYMPATHY
Mumbling over my shoulder daily: "HURRY, HURRY and HURRY !"
Accusing me of always trying to get MC
But my sickness was due to over stretch OT
Going home after midnight by TAXI
And they pay me only bus fee
My colleague likes me because of my honesty and can easily bully
They said I don't know how to carry.
I Park-Tor and became STEADY
Finally had to MARRY
Because gahment gave baby bonus MONEY
I lost money holding Wedding Dinner PARTY
Cheeky friends donating only cheap PANTY
After marriage, nothing was EASY
In one year, I became DADDY
I can't support my family and our BABY
Being tied down for life to repay 2 rooms HDB and rising monthly utilities to PUB

My bank account has NO MONEY.
POSB balance is almost EMPTY
DBS wants to charge me EXTRA FEE
Insisting that "Nothing is FREE!"
So I moonlight as KARANG GUNI.
Many times I want to jump MRT But that is not EASY
My wife cries: "Who is going to support me and our BABY?"
So I can't MATI.
I went to seek assistance from the MP
His reply was simple and easy:

"Vote for me, vote for me, vote for me".
He never tells me any convincing Policy.
How to help the poor with more GST?
Why I cannot have pay increase but they can have increase?

Before, my MP said "Vote for me, we give you sweeties".
Now, they want to increase salary, because "You voted me".
They claim they made good economy for our country.
They benchmark themselves using GDP.
They said, "To get the best man, you have to pay high fee" otherwise, they will join MNC.
And all your 'char bor' become maids in other COUNTRY.

Next will be the GST.
My boss say "no" to increase in salary,
It's really make me worry.
Our Health Ministry said let GP set their consultation fee.
If the GP charges high fee, don't let them see.
No money, how can healthy
If fall sick, can only mati
In hospital, can afford Class C.
I don't mind all nurses are aunty,
But only one doctor to see
No money for operation, I Tan Si

We should vote with our heart and not let the old thinking of "better not take the risk" or "Govt can track you down if you vote against them"

If they done a good job, vote for them by all means.

If they did not, then don't vote for them.

I am a floating independent who used to vote for PAP. Since I am middle age and has not been working for a few years, I will assess the govt on what they have done for me.

Come election day, all they need to convince me are:-

i) Why they deserve the $millions salary.

ii) Why are there so many foreigners queueing with me for a job.

iii) Why are things so expensive?

As of now, my opinion is that Govt will say nothing on the above and during election rally, they will talk about 2020 and if we don't vote for them, Sgp will fall.

How to look so far when I am still trying to survive now?

They are ready to answer your questions.Come election day, all they need to convince me are:-

i) Why they deserve the $millions salary.

Their answers to your questions will be:

i) We have helped 11% of Singaporeans to become millionaires! So we deserve our million dollar paychecks! If you do not belong to the 11%, that is because you are not working hard enough and need spurs on your back.

ii) This is a meritocratic society, may the "best" man wins. Foreigners are cheaper, being cheap is also a merit you know?

iii) We are small, vulnerable and unique nation-aspiration. Cannot compare to other countries you know?

Convinced? ;)
