End of life treatment

An elderly woman had a heart attack. Her children sent her immediately to a private hospital. The cardiologist carried out a stent and bypass operation. The patient was placed on intensive care (ICU). She passed away five days later.

The family received a bill for more than $50,000 from the private hospital. This does not include the fees of the cardiologist and other specialists that were called to attend to the patient. It is likely to cost another $100,000 or more.

The family does not know why it was necessary to bring in the other specialists. They got the impression that they are friends who are called into help to add up the bill.

I now wish to give my views about this matter.

Look at the luxury cars parked at the doctors lot in front of the private hospitals and the bungalows they live in. Doesn't it tell us something. You are absolutely right its a racket. I personally know of one who lives in a $40 million dollar bungalow in King Alberts Park.

I had an operation on my broken bones and had a metal plate screwed into the bones to hold it together. It costed me $16k. One month later during physiotherapy I was told that the ligament was damage and had to be taken out. I had to undergo a second operation and stayed another 8 days in hospital. The doctor came in every morning and asked how I was doing for less than 10 minutes. The second bill was nearly $20,000. I had to pay 30% of the bill as insurance only covered for B class.

I have heard similar stories from friends who had to surgery the 2nd time especially cancer patients . They had to stay in hospital for weeks. Some of them their bills reached an astounding few hundred thousands.
